What do the different colors mean? I have seen red , black, white, and green.

A Red dot in the forehead is called Bindi (in Hindi)/ Pottu (in Tamil)

Only singles and married women will have this.
A widow cannot have red dot.

different Colors are just fashion.There is no spec meaning like single/married.

No Potttu/bindi means she is a Widow.

The different colours are because some just think that they're pretty and put on the sticky ones for purely decorative purposes.

see if u really want to know then it was a symbol of being married OR blessing of God when u get it in temple by priest but now a days it just a thing of beauty for educated & modern crowd so they put it in any colour(even more than u describe ) & shape.
but still some married women put it to show they r married & u can get it in temple by priest as a blessing of God.
