TMJ is Temporomandibular Joint. A lot of people call the pain they get in the joint TMJ but it is actually called TMD Temporomandibular Dysfunction or Disorder. It is very painful and needs treating by your dentist. It will only get worse if untreated. It is not a virus as stated by another person who answered your question.

TMJ is not lockjaw, but the others have explained it well. You may indeed need to see a dentist, but I found that my chiropractor helped me alot. He had me open and close my mouth very slowly and I could actually feel the out of alignment of my upper and lower jaw. He then used his activator and did an adjustment and the pain was gone and in about 15 minutes, so was the headache that I had had for two days.
Hope this helps. Good luck. You really do need someone to help you as this can get to the point that the pain is unbearable.

I know what you mean. The good old days are any time that seemed simpler or better. For us, that could mean the 50's, or childhood, or last week. But you are right, there was no time in human history that was perfect, that we can look back on as something being entirely good. We like parts and pieces of "The Good Old Days". People often end up ignoring that those bad things ever happened. In this one instance, I think it is a case of collective optimism for the past, of focusing on the good rather than the bad (which I think runs contrary to human nature in most other respects).

TMJ is temporomandibular joint. This term shouldn't be used to call symptoms that occur in your joint. TMD is the term that you can use to call temporomandibular disoder which covers pain, clicking/popping sound in the joint, limited range of motion (e.g. limited opening or moving to the side) of your lower jaw (mandible).

TMJ stands for "tempro-mandibular joint disfunction". It is a sort of catch-all term for jaw problems.
