Cats recognize each other by scent. The one that got out came back with "foreign" smells that the other cat didn't recognize. The "escapee" was treated like a stranger. This is normal. The cats will work it out. With time, the new smells will disappear. You can help the process by "mixing" the scents of both cats - take a towel/brush etc., use it on one cat and then on the other. Because their scents are now "mixed", they will recognize each other easier. I've done it with mine.

I've had cats all of my life, and anytime one of them disappeared for a while the others had to warm up to it again when it finally returned. I'm sure that since the other one was still inside, and when the other got back it had different scents on it that the other cat wasn't used to and didn't recognize. Give it time and I'm sure that the hissing one will realize who it is he's hissing at and it'll be all good.

The kitty who got outside picked up a lot of strange smells that the indoor kitty has not encountered so the inside kitty doesn't know what to make of her.
Put a little vanilla extract or scented hand cream on both the cats to mask strange odors and make them smell the same.
Many cats have this reaction when one goes to vet and the other does not.

She probably has the smell of other animals on her. The same thing happened to my niece. She worked for a vet at the time, and she was told to wash the cat and everything would settle down. She did and it did. Things were so bad she had to separate them into rooms. She has three cats and they were all hissing and fighting.

I know what you mean. I had two cats and they did the exact thing. I asked my vet and she said that the indoor cat is not used to the smells of the outside world. Do you know if the other cat was around any other cat while outside?

It is the smells that the cat picked up while outdoors, give the cat that got out a bath and all will return back to normal. Besides, it could have picked up a flea getting out or even lice. bath with cat shampoo.

the cat that went out probably smells different now, just give the one that stayed in a little time. They should be okay after a while.

She has a strange smell now to the other cat. You may have to bathe the one that went outdoors. Wait and see.
