Could be due to depth perception... When you add water it makes the water move and she/he picks up on the motion. I had a cat that had to put its paw in the water before it would drink. They can't tell where the water is... It may also have something to do with the temperature of the water. Running water is often cooler.

I have had pets (dogs and cats) that were the same way and I don't know if this is true or not but I think it's because they're smart. I think it's some kind of instinct to prefer running water since still water would be more likely to have bacteria and make them ill.

I had a bubbler-style water dish for a cat which he loved but...the water does evaporate faster so you do have to refill it a lot.

Are you sure she is not drinking from the bowl? We have chihuahua pups that like to drink the water as it is being poured in but they do drink from the bowl at other times too. They just like the fresh water.

Some animals are very particular about water. You can get her a bubbler water dish or a fountain type at the pet store.

Maybe she has caught on that she isn't suppose to help herself to things on her own... lucky break!

I hope she will see to her needs if left alone for the day... may need to check the water level before and after a long day...

My boxer prefers someone to be in the room when she eats... and after 3 years, will leave things on the table alone by herself.

Best wishes!

If she is old she possibly cannot see the water that is still in the bowl. She can, however, see the water being poured into the bowl.

Hope that helps.

She wants to be sure it is fresh water. My mom had a poodle that would only drink water if it was fresh, in a cup and had an ice cube in it. Go figure. She is picky.

The water is getting stale in the bowl. Got to petsmart and get her one of those dog watering bottles with the bowl attached to it. It will stay fresh alot longer. I had this problem with one of my dogs. They want to be able to drink fresh water just like we do.

For many animals, their instinct is to only drink moving water. Still water, in nature, is often stagnant and full of algae and microbial parasites, so animals have evolved to avoid it when possible.

Very few dogs exhibit the behavior you describe. Still, if it worries you, try one of these: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=5864&Ntt=water&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=0&Nty=1
It will keep your pup's water running continuously.

My dog (not a Chihuahua) is the same way. He does drink when he's thirsty, and usually only when he doesn't think anyone is watching.
