Was it being away from home, the food, the yelling, lack of sleep, etc.?

actually, the food is quite good. It's prepared by civilian contractors. You don't have lack of sleep but rather you have to get used to operating a different schedule. 0500-2100,,,you get up early but you get plenty of sleep. Most americans aren't too used to getting up that early to go to PT then work pretty hard through out the day. Also, the fact you will be working out every day is a little physically exterting.
The biggest issue will be the discipline the Drill Sergeant will be instilling in you. They must take you from being a civilian and make you a Sodier. It's a rough transformation. The more personal discipline you have starting out, the better off you will be.
I didn't have mush problem with basic. I was raised in the military and it didn't bother me being away from home. I was used to the discipline because of my parents and i was in pretty good shape.
My biggest problem there was putting up with all the personalities. You will have about 40 people in your platoon from all walks of life that you ahve to depend on for the next 9-14 weeks. If they are dirt bags then it will test your strentgh to put up with them. That is the hardest part.

Marine Crops boot camp sucks in every way possible. The food seems delicious specially when you are hungry, to bad you don't get enough time to enjoy it. I remember almost crying over a pound cake I dropped in the middle of long hump. If you like sleeping late you are in for a cruel awakening, literally. You dream of having to get up running, that if you get a chance to sleep. You will definitely miss home when you are somewhere in the hills carrying ammunition cans at 3 in the morning like freakin zombies.

I was an army medic before going on to college.

For me it was dealing with heights during the obstacle course and confidence course. I got through them, but was terrified from day one knowing they were coming.

The good part is that I received a lot of confidence. I went on to do a lot of high up things, like jumping out of planes (airborne and HALO/HAHO), and STABO (suspended under a helicopter for special ops).

The food wasn't great, but it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Being away from home wasn't hard since I was fresh out of high school and single. The yelling was just part of the mind games, so I knew it wasn't personal. The lack of sleep was tough for me.

If you are headed to boot camp or basic training good luck to you, and thanks for your service to us all. Good luck.

Lack of sleep and the unknown. You didn't really know what would happen next. We once had a fire alarm go off, it was pouring down rain, and it was 2 AM. We stood out in the pouring rain, in Texas, in our underwear and blankets, for 2 hours. It was a false alarm and we were all exhausted the next day in classes.

The hardest part of basic military training, would actually be losing the camaraderie between fellow recruits, upon leaving.

Some of the people. Jerks are hard to deal with when you have to be around them 24/7.

Army basic training wasn't hard at all. The worst part was mass punishment over other stupid people's constant mistakes.
