I have a chow chow- Black short haired, I've had him since he was 3 months old- he's now 7...I live in South Florida we have summer tempuratures about 10 months out of the year- most people do not know this but a chow chows fur actually protects it from the heat I take him out for about 20 minutes during the afternoon for his walk and he does fine- I do leave water out for him all day so if/when he does get hot he drinks whenever he wants.

To Answer your question your chow will adjust to the heat- As long as you don't leave him outside all day- that will make any dog suffer- Just take him for 20-30 minute walks,in the afternoon - or if you walk your chow before 10am he'll be fine, check for hot spots (scabs on your chows back ,usually by its tail and on its side by its ribcage)- if you see them get hot spot medicine that will cure that and leave water out for your chow so when it does get hot it will keep from dehydrating.

As a side note I see people above keep warning about a chows temperment- My chow is by far the sweetest dog I've ever known-It really has to do with how YOU treat her and not necessarily the breed- My chow is great with kids and adults and other dogs- he loves em- because I treat my dog with love and raised him as a loving dog since he was a puppy.

Hope this helps like I said I live in south Florida where it averages 90 degrees for most of the year.

I own a Chow Chow dog and live in Washington, DC, which has very hot summers. It quickly becomes too hot for him and he can only go outside for a few minutes at a time. They can overheat in minutes. Summer is a miserable time for him as a result.

Please note: This is true across the board with Chow Chows, and it is NOT resolved by getting him a "lion cut."

You are very smart to consider this carefully -- I would strongly recommend choosing another breed. Frankly, I would move if I could -- it's just so bad for my dog in DC.

I know Chow Chows are adorable, but it would really be cruel to have a dog who can only go outside for a few minutes at a time for almost half of a year.

Good luck!

my daughter has a chow chow. She lives in Northern Alberta Canada and the dog suffers with the heat. I would not buy one if I lived where it is hot 12 months out of the year. They are also prone to skin conditions because they are so sensitive to the heat. She has had a very hard time with the dog because they are such a stubborn breed and should only be owned by very experienced dog owners. I have owned many dogs but I would not want to own a chow. They have to be socialized from a very early age with many other dogs because they are an aggressive breed. Hers requires a special diet.

Just know that Chows are much more difficult to train than any other breed and must be trained differently. (I know it's off the subject, just thought you should know in case you didn't)

I would personally think it may be to hot.. But then animals adapt to living conditions very well. However, Please be careful in your choice, I have one and he temperment was good around adults, But not very good with children.
