Sometimes when I'm sleeping my leg will randomly twitch and wake me up. Does anyone know what causes the twitch? I've heard that it's quite common. Is there anything I can do about it or do I just deal with it?

this could be restless leg syndrome and yest its quit common (may affect as many as 12 million people in the United States) its neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move them for relief which maybe felt as burning or creeping sensations the cause is not known but its associated with obesity, smoking, iron deficiency and anemia, nerve disease and also diabetes.
Avoidance of caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine may help improve symptoms

It might be restless leg syndrome. Ask your doctor about that and possible medications. My sister has that, and she just walks the feeling out. We have a groove in our porch now, but it works for her.

You might try taking potassium suppliments or eating a banana before bed. It might not be a twitch or a cramp. I used to get them after LONG hours on my feet at work, and since potassium worked on menstrual cramps, I tried it for my legs. It worked wonders.

Good luck, and I hope you get a decent night's sleep soon.

It sounds like restless leg syndrome. I have problems with that also off and on. Watching my caffeine intake, especially in the evening, seems to help some. There is also a med out now called Requip (I believe that's what it's called) that's supposed to be for restless legs, but mine hasn't bothered me to the point that I need to see my doctor about it yet. Hope this gives you some insight.

Do you have Restless Legs Syndrome - creepy-crawly feeling in your legs when you are trying to sleep? If it's that, then you need to avoid caffeine before going to bed. There is medication for it too. If it's not anything like that, then I don't know what to tell ya! You must be a light sleeper, that is probably frustrating. I wish you good sleep!

i had a friend whose leg twitched but not during her sleep. it twitched just about whenever it felt like it

later she went to see a doc and the doc prescribed her calcium tablets, probably just some imbalance in your diet i guess, but if it really distrubs u or it impairs you in your daily activities it is best to see a doctor

You can get melatonin over the counter at the drug store. Take some before going to bed - it will help.

Don't know the cause, sorry.

It's called Restless Leg Syndrome. I don't think there is anything you can do about it.
