the only thing ive ever heard of staying in your stomach is something called a bezoar. which the most common type is made of hair which your body doesn't digest. bezoars are most commonly only formed with non absorbable food or fiber. things such as plastic bags, hair, etc...but can be formed by anything. so yes you can have bubblegum in your stomach for years.(they can form anywhere in the GI tract but most commonly in the stomach)

i am an x-ray tech and have seen a bezoar in upper gi studies. the one i saw was formed from popcorn which the woman ate every day. go figure. not a real common thing unless your a hair eater which is why i guess its a more common problem for younger women with mental health issues or the disease pica.

You know I always thought that was true until I saw an episode on Oprah about 2 - 3 weeks ago. Dr. Oz was on the show and answered that question. He said even though parents tell their kids "yes, gum will stay in your stomach for 7 years" its simply not true! The gum will digest just like all the other foods we eat!

I too have wondered this same question. I'm pretty sure that it passes just like corn, or lettuce (which aren't able to break down in your stomach) but if it WOULD stay in your stomach it would take up to seven years (that's what I've heard) to breakdown in your stomach because of it is made of.

When I was a kid I would think if I swallowed gum I'd grow up with the belly of a pregnant woman.

I believe that gum is digestible but it does take a long time

well I once head that too but actually it digest just like everything else, however it is harder for the body to digest gum. the longest it will stay in your system is about 3 days.

the way bubble gum used to be made yes it used to stay in your stomach but now its made with different ingredients and it actually disolves with the acids in your scomach and you pass it as you do normal food

Nope. It is a myth. The stomach acids destroy it very quickly.
Here is a great site that dispells myths
