Basic training is first. Then he goes to a training base to train for his specialty (communications, infantry, armor etc). That can take 6-8 weeks. Then he will get stationed at an Army base in USA or Germany or S. Korea (may be a few more choices). He will be assigned a Unit that he will stay with. When they move he moves. If that Unit goes to war, he goes to war. Generally he will not be sent to war for at least a year after boot camp (unless things change). He needs lots of training first. His life is by chain of command and he will work his way up ranks. It is like being the head of your class and having others students have to spend time in the class and do work to move up. When he starts out he is the lowest rank of private and he moves up from there.
You may not see him much as Army life keeps a soldier busy.

He is the only person that could tell you that. I know because I have been in the military. You should consider someone more your own age though. It is very easy for an older guy to get in serious legal trouble for dating someone too young.

Sounds like you should ask him, but after basic he goes to training to teach him a military skill.

These range from personnel clerk to photographer to infantryman to artillery crewman.

Then he gets sent someplace to a duty station to do his job.
