Forrest Mars Sr. saw soldiers during the Spanish Civil War eating chocolate pellets that were coated in sugar to prevent chocolate from sticking to their fingers. After the rights were purchased by Americans Forrest Mars Sr. and R. Bruce Murrie in 1939, they had to reintroduce them to the domestic market with a different name because there was already a candy product sold in the U.S. under the name Smarties. To identify their new brand, they combined the first initials of their last names: M & M. M&M's were first sold in the United States in 1941.

Forrest Mars Sr. and R. Bruce Murrie is what M&M was named after the last name of the two men who brought M&M's to America after seeing a similar product being eaten by soliders in spain. Murrie left the company shortly after but the famous intials stayed on the sweet candy coating.

Have you ever had Mrs. M's candy? It is premium chocolate, made by the Mars company, and named for grandma Mars, the factory is in Las Vegas. They do tours, and give out a free sample. The lemon ones are to die for, and the liquor filled ones are said to cause rowdy drunkeness on planes leaving LV, full of tourists who visted the factory, and couldn't wait to get home to try the chocolate, brought home in the carry on luggage, so it wouldn't melt in the cargo hold.

In 1940, the original M&Ms didn't have any printing on them. The "m" was introduced a decade later, in honor of creator Forrest Mars Sr.. Originally, the "m" was in black ink, but it switched to white in 1954.
