It's the work of a philosophy of life that demands rigorous evidence before a thing is believed.
It's the work of a Christian philosophy that demands that a literal interpretation of the Bible is true in the face of scientific evidence that it's not.
It's the work of people who preach adamantly that the world is only 6000 years old.
It's the work of people who go around screaming "My grandfather wasn't a monkey" while that's not what evolution teaches.
Basically, people are turning to Atheism when the paradigm that they witness fails in credibility.
Satan has nothing to do with it. (I don't believe in a Satan anyway) I do think though, that Christianity would have a better chance if they stopped immitating the persecutors of Gallelleo and actually listened to science. There are no notations in the Bible (with a few exceptions) that say "This is Hyperbole", "This is parable", etc. 6 literal days to build a world? "God made" meaning that it had to be individually and not the most wonderful system ever devised being set into motion?
No, Athiesm is growing because religion doesn't seem to have the answers. Religion isn't breeding peace. Religion isn't breeding stable marriages. Religion isn't breeding children free from violence. Religion seems, these days, just another excuse to pick a fight.

No it is because God's people wont reach out to those who ask questions... many atheists become that way due to pain or something that happened to them when they were younger. Where are God's children when people search for answers? Why do God's children hide in temples when commanded to reach to the lost at the farthest ends of the earth?
I had that question asked to me just yesterday. What are we Christians doing to take a stand against the genocide in Darfur?
I am not trying to judge anyone... but when an atheist does not see anything but Christian lip service.. then who really is to blame? The atheist is part of the mission field... and we need to ask ourselves where are those that gather the harvest?
Many Christians are complacent. They would rather watch football on TV and take it easy. Some say they have families to raise but I say... if you want to be a good witness for your children... let them see you in action!
Well thanks for reading this and giving me an ear.

Atheism is growing due to advancements in science and technology. We are learning through science many different reasons why bible-based beliefs are completely false. Technology now allows us to retrieve this information personally rather than have it filtered out by a fascist government. Just imagine how many will turn away from Islam after the Islamic regions catch up with the computer age.

go back to the begining. In the very begining, and to the very begining about what we are taught to believe in school. The biggest lie, the one that teaches people that we were not created but evolved. If "the beast" which is government, can enforce what we learn, then they can control, how our perceptions are formed about the world. Evolution tells people that creation is a lie. So if evolution is true (which it is a useless theory, layered upon theory, and more theory and on and on) people will be unable to believe the rest of the Bible.
Evolution is only true to the extent, that a species will produce after itself. Breads of dogs can bread with other dogs, and make a new kind of Dog. The Bible even says that animals will produce after themselves.
People do not understand, that when there is a mutation information is lost or distorted in the gene pool. We did not all descend from birds, or monkeys, or dust, or germs, or from some chemical reaction.
Natural selection is exactly that. Selection of existing genes, between species that can breed.
they try to tell us the world is millions of years old. but they use circular reasoning. for example, they tell you that you can tell how old a fossil is by the layer of earth it was found in. Then, they tell you that you can tell how old the layer of earth is by the fossils found in them. Circular reasoning with no clear logic.
People even try to use a stupid little fly, that was mutated in a lab, to prove evolution. It was merely that, MUTATED. Mutations lose genes. the flies were inferior to the grandfather flies.
there are many other examples. Science and geology prove more the fact that fossils were formed by a massive flood, with alot of force.
Petrified wood is said to have taken millions of years to form. There are petrified boots, a pickle from about 1910, and many other things from our age that have been petrified.
The more i study science, the more i can see how people are just taught to believe, in a very decietful way, the theory of evolution. It is a lie about our beginings. Taught early in our life, and it forms the basis, to all the other things one is able to concieve of.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Well, look at it realistically. Organized religion is basically set up to give you a foundation upon which you are supposed to base your life. However, when information or experiences that you have conflict with this foundation, religion says to either ignore or deny the conflict (the infamous phrase: "well, god wanted it that way"). Sooner or later anyone who actually thinks about their life is going to start questioning this process (the ignoring and denying) and once that happens, the foundation itself gets opened up to questioning as well.
Also, religions tend to think of their basis in supernatural beings as being reality. They point to their history, their texts, and their traditions as evidence of this, and then use fear and manipulation to enforce it. Basically they're saying, "God exists because our religion has always said he exists, and if you don't believe what we're telling you, then you will be doomed for all eternity."
This may have worked in earlier times when people just were not as literate and as educated as people are now, and they had to take what they perceived to be their superiors word for it. Nowadays though, people are much more likely to think for themselves, read up on the opposing points of view, and then decide for themselves what they believe in. And in that case, more people are going to pick a viewpoint that fits with their worldview more logically, rather than going along with the standard dogma just because that is what their religion tells them they should do.
Hope that helps some...
Oh, and I really like Deirdre H's answer too.

No, it's just normal intelligent people understanding that there is no invisible man living in the sky watching everything we do. Religion is mythology. Satan, god, jesus, and allah are no more real than the tooth fairy, Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, or the Great Pumpkin.
