I'm a 20-year-old college student who doesn't really have any friends other than my brother, sister, and cousin. I've never been on a date or even had the nuts to ask a girl out. I often feel very sad about being so alone. I've had girls like me in the past, but I have this mental block when it comes to having relationships of any kind with people.

First off, my sister and brother are two of my best friends. :-)However, I do understand you want other friends and maybe a girlfriend. Keep putting yourself out there but in a fun and relaxed environment. Volunteering is a great way to meet people with similar interests plus it makes you feel good. You also mentioned you have a "mental block" when it comes to relationships of any kind with people. All people have fears but at different degrees. You might have some issues that you need resloved. Perhaps talking to a counselor might be helpful and give you more confidence. Good luck and I'm sure things will work out. :-)Zena

Why do feel sad? See relationships are not something that you look for, they just happen to build. Like when we are born we do not make the choice of what kind of parents or family we want, we jsut happen to build that relationship. Similar is the case for friends and other long term commitments. Life is a lot more interesting if you look outside the box of relationships. And I am sure some time in life you will get across someone who you would like to be with. You do not have to worry at any stage.

Why don't you try going out with your brother and sister and a bunch of other people? Make sure your brother and sister are available, have them invite people out and you invite someone and just relax and go to the movies or something. Why don't you try that once a week or so until you're comfortable with new people.

Maybe talking to a good counselor about why you are so shy might help. Careful there because lousy counselors give lousy advice and its hard to know the difference.

There are also self help groups for shy people...try a google search. You're not the only one...it just seems like it.

Good luck!

Relax, be yourself

The fact that you are asking this question means that there is hope for you.

I was a 20yo college student myself before I started getting socially active.

Find an activity you enjoy doing and fate will take care of itself.

I was involved in the theatre, marital arts, indoor soccer, and weight lifting. Just so happens the first to girls I started dating were in the theatre and martial arts respecitively. Being a late bloomer isn't as strange as you might think. Many of the kids in your age cohort may act happy but, trust me, they are just as confused and upset as you are.

when you meet the right one, it will all fall into place. You will not have to worry, you will know, and it will just happen. Dont sacrafice waiting for the perfect person for getting rid of the lonliness as soon as possible, hold on for that one woman that will make you happy the rest of your life. I am a 20 year old college student. I know she will come, and i am not worried. God has a plan, and i will accept it, whatever it is. She will come.
