As marlene said, it's really hard to tell if a budgie is male or female. Just wait until it matures and watch the colour of the cere (the part just above the beak). Males develop a blue cere as they mature, while the cere on a female will stay brown.

As to being a baby...have a look at the barred patten on the head- if this extends right down to the top of the beak then it is young (less than about 3 months old) and have a look at the eyes- if they're all black then it's a baby, if there are white rings then it is older.

Talk to a pet shop about feed...don't give him an all-seed diet as this can result in vitamin & mineral deficiencies.

Make sure that you've got a good sized cage (better to be long than high- birds don't fly straight up and down). Use tree branches as perches...the plastic, dowel or sandpaper covered ones that come with most cases are incredibly bad for their feet.

Just give him a few days to settle in. Sit by his cage and talk to him, then start to offer him some food by hand (e.g. millet sprays- you can just buy them from the supermarket). Get him used to you moving your hand closer- if he'll let you, start by stroking his chest and this will help you teach him to sit on your finger.

If your plan is to eventually let him come out of his cage, it's a good idea to get his wings partly clipped (get your vet to do this for you). This slows him down a little, so if he hits something while out of the cage he's less likely to injure himself.

Good luck, and enjoy making friends with him :o) Email me if you want any more help.

Only certain veterinarians are trained to tell the sex of birds. I own a parrot and even on bigger birds, the sex sometimes can only be determined by a blood test. Don't worry about the sex, it really doesn't matter. Go to the pet store and get Budgie food- yes, the people will know what food to sell you. As far as taming, let him settle into his new environment for a few days and then start feeding him from your hand (take the food out of the cage first). He will befriend you and eventually allow you to touch him and hold him.

well i'm the man that can help you.
you have a budgie and a cage leave IT alone for one week until it settles in to it's new enviroment.do NOT feed it greens,a canary and millet seed mix will suffice,a millet spray once a week as a treat(they are fattening).a little oyster shell grit in a seperate dish to help it grind it's seed will be welcome.a cuttle fish bone for calcium and your budgie will be content.
a baby budgie will moult at 3 months old into it's adult plumage i would guess yours is still in it's baby plumage.
easy to sex as a baby a males cere(the wattle above the beak)will be rounder and a purply colour where as the hen will be flatter a washy blue colour showing almost white on the outer edges of the cere.talk to him with your lips at the level of his/her beak every time you go near or pass the cage say hello.a male is easier to tame and teach to talk.do not get his wings cut.open the cage and gently put a finger just above his feet push into his body and he will step onto your finger,do this until he gets use to you and then bring him out of the cage on your finger.
i would suggest that your first priorty is to buy a book on budgies for begginners.this is my 47th year with budgies, need help you e-mail me,take care and enjoy.

u can tell the sex by the colour of the two little nostrils above its beak if they are deep blue it is a boy n brown if a girl. boy budgies can be taught to talk. u can buy budgie seed at the supermarket n millet sprays at pet shop. they are easily trained to go on to ur finger with a lot of gentleness and patientence. they love millet spray and chickweed also cuttlefish. put sandpaper on the bottom of his cage to keep his claws short. they make great pets, i've 1 myself.

I have a budgie aswell and the way to keep him healthy I give him some greens every day ie. thistle, beans, lettuce, grass. DO NOT GIVE HIM AVOCAVO!! This will kill him. Another way in which my budgie is happy is we bought him a mirror, this way when you are not home, he is not bored as he talks to it because he thinks he has a friend, my budgie is always sitting next to his mirror, he loves it

If its a baby boy his cere (nose) should be purple-blue but if its older it will be just blue,
Baby females cere will be creamy, but an older hen should be brown

Your bird is dependant upon you for everything. Therefore, it is very important that you provide all the necessary things that your pet needs for health, vitality and quality of life.

Regularly wash out your birds environment.
Provide clean drinking water every day.
Your bird needs more than just seeds for food. So whilst it is paramount to provide a quality mix of bird food every day, it is essential also each day to vary the diet with a different supplement.
Try these suggestions:-

Salad Cress - Peas - Apple - Celery - Courgette - Sweetcorn - Watercress - Boiled Rice - Parsley Sprig - Grapes - Cucumber - Dandelion Leaves - Broccoli - Broard Beans - Carrott - Finger of bread soaked in water - Mashed Boiled Egg (shell also) - Tomatoes - Lettuce - Cooked Pasta - Radishes (leaves also) -

Millet Spray is an especially loved treat for birds, but it is important not to give this too often as they will refuse to eat their regular seed in favour of it!

It is best not to give Cabbage as this can cause digestive problems.

Other important requirements for your birds health are Cuttlefish Bone, Grit, and Iodine Block. These are necessary for your pets bones and digestive system.

Your bird will occasionally enjoy a dish of tepid water to splash in.

Keep your pet away from draughts and direct sunlight. House plants, chemical cleaners, polish, & hair sprays, etc are highly toxic and dangerous to your bird.

A bird in a cage on its own will need your companionship for the large part of the day, unless you provide many distractions such as toys, mirrors, swings , lots perches and possibly a background sound like a radio. Birds are naturally inquisitive and playful animals and will become listless, distressed, destructive and possibly aggressive if bored and frustrated with their existence.

Your pets wings may have been clipped so flight will be restricted though not prevented and so doors, windows and other potential hazards should be taken into account before letting your bird out of its cage. Allow your pet out of its cage regularly as this exercise will keep them interested in their environment and alert. (Have your birds wings clipped approximately every three months).

To gain a subdued bird let it accompany you in your daily routine. Perching on your shoulder or head your pet will enjoy the variety of the surroundings as you move about freely. You will be able with patience and determination train your bird to talk and perform tricks.

To train your pet to talk you will need to provide close and regular contact, repeating the same phrase consistently. Your bird will be unlikely to talk if it has the companionship of another bird, or if it has too many toys, especially a mirror! However, as mentioned before these accessories are essential to a bird that will be left on its own over long periods of time.

Birds can be taught to mimic tricks you teach by the action of a finger. Reward positive behaviour with a tasty treat..

With a healthy lifestyle in which you take good care of your pet, play with it and make its life interesting, your bird will likely live a long and happy life.
