The thing about being a successful criminal is, it means nobody has found out you are a criminal. Yes, smart criminals can be very successful. Criminals tend to get caught because they don't plan before acting, they lack the discipline to watch their steps before, during, and after criminal activity, and they lack the discipline to keep their trap shut. If you're smart, you can be successful. Thing is, not too many really smart people these days became common criminals, which itself should tell you something about the nature of crime.

I guess in the meaning of success is not being caught. I am sure there are some. But like most criminals they do eventually get caught or discovered. I would think that if you are discovered as a criminal then you can't be that successful. What do you think?

If they are really successful, no one would know about it. I doubt seriously that the Black Chameleon could last very long in real life. Sometimes criminals are so successful that they make a great deal of money, enough that even if convicted they are beyond punishment - Remember Cap Weinberg a cabinet member in the Regan administration who was convicted in court but pardoned by Regan's successor, George Bush the First.

Yes. Have you seen that movie with Tom Hanks and Leo DiCaprio "Catch Me If You Can?" It's based off a true story of a fraud artist that took the FBI a good portion of the 1970s to catch (I can't remember the guy's name for the life of me right now). The criminal eluded the authorities for a very long time, made millions of dollars, and after serving his time, he ended up in the FBI payroll as a senior fraud consultant. I believe he's still working for them to this very day, and is making a good, decent life.

Frank Abignale... he DID get caught eventually... but after he served his time, he got REALLY rich by using his criminal know-how to help the FBI and to help banks develop more security precautions on checks.
I saw a documentary on the man on A&E... Also, he wrote his autobiography (Catch Me, If You Can), and then the book became a movie (DiCaprio played Abignale).

I know of a lot. How about elements of our govt, and all the people who benefitted from 9/11, and the subsequent wars? Those who carried out 9/11 had a lot to gain.

of course. many i agree with one response are Mafia oriented. Its all over the world. then there are some perfectly insane people who live next door to some of us who abuse their kids and unborn kid and kidnap and rape because they think it's fun and lie cheat and embezzle because they say they need to survive. i lived with two people like that and when i went to the DA 's office to file criminal charges and a complaint with several others they turned me away even when i had evidence. so if your neighbors can do all that and i can live with it - then finally getting away and no justice is served yes-- i guess they are successful.

Yes, but it's mostly high profile criminal. Many of them are very intelligent (often above average) person. It depends on crime, a few that come to mind are:
Hitman, fraud, and theif.
If you think hitman simply buy a rifle and kill person then go home, fraud simply write a bad check, and theif simply steal from bank, you are wrong!
Hitman have to stay up to date with all kind of weapons (LOT of knowledges include how far bullet travel, how far powder will spread, ballistic, timing, etc...), current event, how to find client, disguise, able to act very well, do lot of survillances, and list goes on.
Theif often have to stay up to date with all new security techniques, have computer knowledge, do a lot of survillance, and other things. It depend on type of theif, if he steal to keep thing for himself, he will need to know where to move items and keep item. If he steal for clients, he will need to have knowledge in whatever it's the client want.
Fraud will have to know a lot of stuff depend on what type of fraud it's. Usually they will need to have lot of computer knowledges.
On top of that all they will have to keep up to date with how law enforce work, their investage techniques, know how to spot someone who is watching them, how to keep moneys hide, how to keep ego down, etc...
So it's basically a 24/7 career even after retirement. It's really not worth it.
