Hands down the best sports riot I have ever seen. Certainly the most entertaining.
Who could forget cell-phone man (Damien Harris), clocking Golota over the head moments after the DQ, inflicting more damage in seconds, than Bowe was able to during the entire fight?

Or the sight of Rock Newman stepping over Bowe clutching his ba**s, supposedly to defend Bowe's honor? Or the little black lady in the crowd smashing people over the head with her umbrella?

Most importantly, who could forget the idiot Golota, on his way to pulling off the upset of the year, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory because he simply refused to keep his punches up?
And then, to cement his idiocy, he does the exact same thing in the rematch.

Here it is, take a look - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoHUPSOnB_4

Ah, the rich and interesting history of boxing.

Santana - first of all, let me apologise to you for the numbskull's answer before yours.
Okay. You've given me a better understanding of the riot than I ever had. Did not know about the ticket giveaways. That literally explains everything.
Boxing fans are a little crazy and always colorful, but certainly not thugs and animals, as the marauding mobs - including Bowe's corner - were that night.

I was living in Manhattan, two blocks from the Garden, the night that happened. I was watching the fight on HBO, and when the s**t hit the fan, the night was filled with the sound of helicopters and patrol car sirens heading toward the Garden.

It was indeed a race riot, sparked by Bowe's corner's criminal thuggery, caught on tape, seconds after the DQ.

smitty - this is not a referendum on race, my friend, or an exercise in racial finger pointing.
There's no question that the thuggery that night was racially motivated, sparked by Bowe's corner.

Brad ~
I was there Brother, it was crazy. If you weren't African American chances were you were going to be attacked and if by some chance you happened to be carrying a Polish flag you were definitely going to get pounded on.
The fight: HBO had a hard time selling this fight to the public, ticket sales were extremely slow and the night of the fight they (HBO) were giving away tickets to Youth Groups, Church Groups and any other organization that would be willing to fill the arena. This led to major problems because you had people there that normally wouldn't go to a boxing match and were just looking to cause problems.
Bowe and his camp didn't take Golota serious, that was obvious because alls it took was one look at Bowe's flabby out of shape body, he weighed 252 pounds and looked horrible. Rock Neuman was suing HBO for whatever reason and the whole time the arguments were going on with HBO and his manager Bowe didn't train, they didn't know their opponent.
Golota, who I have met through Sam Colona at the Windy City Gym in Chicago wasn't your normal fighter, he bit a fighter, he intentionally headbutted another fighter while being way ahead on all score cards, he was notiorious for hitting fighters low and he constantly used his forearms as weapons. He was indeed a very dirty fighter and in the gym as witnessed by me, he was a complete pig with absolutely no respect for anybody or anything.
The fight Madison Square Garden July 6th 1996. I was really surprised by the amount of Polish fans that came fron Chicago and even by the ones that actually came from Poland to watch Golota who wasn't given a chance to beat Bowe, but I was even more surprised by the amount of people that seemed to look out of place. I've been to thousands of fights from L.A to New York, small venues and large and when you go to these fights and you usually know if it's a good fight crowd or not, and this was not a good fight crowd.
Everything Bowe did Golota had a answer for. Golota was catching him with everything he was throwing making Bowe look like a Golden Glove boxer compared to an experienced Pro. Then Golota landed the first low blow, then the second and the third and fourth and so on. I honestly believe that Riddick was acting more than he was actually hurt, it was obvious he was out of shape because when he was laying in the ring holding his groin, his blubber around his belly was rolling from him trying to catch his breath, you could even see this between rounds as he was sitting on his stool and Eddie Futch's hand would disappear into Bowes fat as rubbed a ice pack on it or when he'd reach in to pull Bowes trucks out so he could catch his breath.
Once Golota was DQ'd, Bowes camp went nuts and this just set things into motion, I witnessed young African American men just turning to Polish fans who were booing the outcome and start punching them, picking up chairs and throwing them into crowds of Polish (White) fans, it was your typical mob mantality. It wasn't only the young men, there were some women there too attacking other woman whos only reason for being attacked was they were cheering for Andrew.
When the security and New Yorks Finest finally restored some sort of order, outside Madison Square Garden if you drove by with a Polish flag in your car, your window would be smashed out, if you were in a cab and had a Polish flag the cabs windows would be smashed out. There weren't that many arrest made that night a lot of the attackers ran as soon as the saw the Police and went threw anything that resembled a exit.
A crazy night indeed, not a good night to be Polish at The Garden

You're right Brad, it was all about race and had nothing to with Andrews low blows. I wonder if anyone can justify the actions of that crowd.

It was despicable what happened the night after the fight. Bowe was overconfident and out of shape. Golota was a dirty fighter and a bully. As far as what happened only people there could say whether it was a race riot or not.

After the Johnson-Jeffries in 1910, black people of over America were murdered by whites in race riots. It was so tragic the complete numbers are not known but it was in the hundreds

Wow, that really was ten yrs ago... I feel so old! That seems like yesterday! I just remember feeling sorry for lu duva and watching him get taken out of the ring. I think that impacted me most about that fight since he is such a legend and put in such a ridiculous situation. And yes golota is a dunce.

Never caught that fight on T.V. and remember reading about the DQ but I had forgotten all about the riot. I learn something new everyday and reminded about things I forget more often than not. Thanks fellas.

Luke F - leave your slanted socialistic political views for the proper forum. Do not persist in trying to foist your distorted and brainwashed views of 9/11 on people who want to discuss the sweet science. It's time YOU dealt with reality.

Hey Brad, its about time you woke up to the truth about 9/11. I encourage you to watch the CNN videos on 9/11, they all talk about explosions and bombs going off in the buildings. It is a real shame you have not done any research yet. I hope you will wake up soon. You make no sense man
