Alpharetta would be a great choice. It is on the north side of Atlanta and has excellent schools. It has good access to interstate highways and is not to far from downtown. It is located in Forsyth county, and this county has grown 42% since the year 2000.

The Burbs are definitely the best for a family.
Try Gwinnett County (northeast of the city) for great schools. The areas of Loganville, Grayson, Lawrenceville, Dacula, Buford, Sugar Hill, and Suwanee are all growing and the housing is very reasonable. It is still beautiful and convenient to everything.
If you are a single with some money, try Buckhead or Virginia Highlands. Real estate is quite pricey in these areas but very near all the nightlife.
Alpharetta and Marietta are also great areas. Alpharetta is further north and the housing is a bit more expensive than in Gwinnett County but still a great area with great schools.
The only places south of the city that I would recommend is McDonough, Peachtree City or Newnan. Steer clear of College Park, East Point, Riverdale and Jonesboro.
Happy House Hunting!

There are a lot of nice parts of Atlanta. It depends on what type of community you are looking for.
Do you want an older established area that is still city like? Try Chamblee, North Atlanta, or Dunwoody.
Do you want a youthful prep/ritzy area? Try Vinnings, Viginia Highlands or Buckhead.
Do you want an area that has newer developments that is still up and coming? If so try Alpharetta, Woodstock, Duluth, S. Atlanta (Camp Creek area) or Dacula.
If want, I can email you some listings..feel free to email me.

Marietta, Alpharetta are both good. Even more farther away, Savannah GA-even better. Atlanta is way overpopulated. I wouldn't advise you to move into the actual city of Atlanta, pick a suburb. Traffic can be horendous.

Alpharetta. It is a gorgeous suburb of Atlanta and is new and well planned. There are flowers and trees everywhere and they have all kinds of housing at reasonable prices. I am going to retire there. Love it.
