Pakistan used to be part of India. After the end of British rule, the religious and ethnick divide between the majority Hindues, and the minority Muslems, led the Muslems to seek there own state. As the north of india had the highest concentration of muslims, that part of the country broke off and became the state of Pakistan.
Of interest is that Gahndi opposed this seperation, but most others, both muslim and hindu agread to it.
There was a Mass Migration of Muslims from all over india to the new Pakistan, Muslems were after all an activly persecuted minority in most places. At the same time, Hindus living in the area that was breaking off, fled fearing persecution.
Only british rule had previously kept the lid on the situation. With Britain moving out, many feared genocide and ethnick clensing on a scale to make Hitler's look tame.
This religous and ethnick devide is that basis for the ongoing tension between the two countries. (both have the atom bomb, and many millitary and political experts rate this as being the Most likely to lead to a nuclear war)
