There is a tribe in my country that dog meat is a traditional delicacy. What makes it different from breeding pigs or cattles?

reject187, you are wrong, cows, pigs and chicken, and many other animals do recognize their caretakers and are capable of some forms of intimacy.

Theres more meat on a cow. to me it seems like a waste of meat. Pork is another story but you'd have to kill how many dogs to equal the weight of a cow. It makes me mad when people waste food.

If you must eat meat, (it's kinder not to, you will live longer and have better karma!), humans are only meant to eat 'grazers' - not carnivores! Cats, lion, dogs and hyena eg are carnivores.. so that is why we eat cows, sheep, deer/buck, chickens/fowl and pigs/warthog (not bush pigs as they eat anything). Although some religions don't eat pig either because they tend to feed on foul stuff and considered dirty. I believe people eat cats and dogs because they're ignorant and will ultimately harm themselves. When you feed bonemeal to cows you get mad cow disease - why? - because they're grazers and not meant to eat meet. If we eat carnivores I believe we might also end up with some awful diseases and can look forward to an early death. Also the karma attached to eating a dog or cat could only bade an unpleasant outcome! Be careful, very careful what meat you eat! It's safer to be a vegetarian.. look at elephant, they're vegetarian and there's nothing stronger than an elephant!

Only conceivable difference might be that we consider dogs and cats of a superior intelligence; or that we are more exposed to them than chickens and cows, because most of us live in cities.
My understanding is that, even in the Bible, God gave us the creatures to use and to eat. Is that off base somehow??
Dog meat in Northern Thailand sells for about $5 usd a kilo. Have not, nor do I intend on trying. I did eat a bug though, as I thought, it tasted like a bug and I won't do that again.

It is a weird one, I have been on this site long enough to know that most think that any animals being killed is wrong. I try get people to choose organic/free range for vegetables and meat for both veg/vegans and omnivores, yet some veg/vegans will still claim it either does not exist and its murder, they want nothing but slaughter to stop simple as that. If I get thumbs down for this then they change their mind and/or they have no clue what they want. All you have to look at is the animal/environment veg//vegan questions to see what they say about farming and it does go along the lines of all farms are abusive, there is no such thing as organic/free range and slaughter is evil. If this is the case where is the meat for pets and zoo animals going to come from. I think you will have the extreme veg/vegans and the realistic ones but unfortunately the extreme ones seem to get more air time if you will on their views which is causing a lot of confusion and frustration with their poor comments. If killing animals is murder then so will it be murder and abuse to keep them, feed them and kill them for some veg/vegan pets.

Dogs and cats (and horses) are companion animals for a reason. Every cat and dog I've known has had great capacity for love and affection towards humans. Cows, chickens, turkeys, fish, etc. do not have this. It makes me sad because cats and dogs are searching for a human to love them while cows and chickens don't really care.

What about a tribe that would eat human babies as delicacies? It is NOT the same pork than cat or dog meat!! You must be an insensitive person.

As an animal WELFARE activist (Note - there is a huge difference between rights and welfare) my opinion is that it is morally wrong to raise and kill any animal - cat, dog, pig, or cow - for the purpose of consumption. I strongly believe that animal life is more important than human desires.

I would think that the shape of the hoof (as defined in the Bible) would be (and is) the determining factor in this country as to what animals would be farmed for food, and activists would base their platform on such. Other countries would (could) see it differently.

it's just cuz it's not typical behavior for where the PETA people are from, america, and americans aren't the most open minded people in the world. a lot of them are actually vegetarians, i thought.
