Because there is comfort to be found in placing responsibility for one's own beliefs in some form of organised religion or thought structure. It takes away any need to think for themselves, or to admit the uncertain truth that we still don't have all the answers yet. Such uncertainty scares the bejezus out of people - better the illogical answer that no clear answer at all.

Consider Isaiah 40:22 which mentions the “circle of the earth.” This description is certainly fitting—particularly when the earth is viewed from space; the earth always appears as a circle, since it is round.

Curiously, many astronomy textbooks credit Pythagoras (c. 570–500 B.C.) with being the first person to assert that the earth is round. However, Isaiah is generally acknowledged to have been written in the 700s B.C.

The secular astronomers before the time of Pythagoras must have thought the Bible was wrong about its teaching of a round earth, yet the Bible was exactly right.

The Bible is inerrant, that is why I believe it.

Do you think it would be better for people to be believing in more recently created religions? I'm not going to name names, but the older religions seem a little more reasonable to me than the newer ones. I haven't found one yet that doesn't seem a little flawed - they all seem to have some group they think it's pretty ok to discriminate against. But for all-out wackiness, the newer religions win hands-down.
And you mean that people once thought that the world was flat, not that the world was once flat...

God declared that the earth is round WAY before man started saying it was "flat". Consider the following verse in the book of Isaiah:

Isaiah 40:22 - "It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:"

There is still a flat Earth society with a surprising number of adherents. Why, you did know that all the space flights, pictures from space and the moon rocks are fakes, didn't you? Same principle at work.

because the proof of the world being round is based on logic.

The proof of every religion is based on faith and trust..

Logic is the universal language. Everyone understand and everyone agrees (except for the illogical ones)

Faith is subjective. So, religion is subjective and wont be settled even in the future.

Remember, when you dont have any logical answer to your question, just have trust and believe in your faith!

Have you followed the history of science? Do you ever look at what scientist used to tell us. A belief in a flat earth is far from our biggest problem.
