The body we are in , when we die becomes the earth. The soul or spirit that used to inhabit the now dead body lives on. So who are we? this human body or that spirit that never dies?

your question is very inteligent.
first thing we have to understan that we r spirit soul, and how can we understand, like this, we remember our all bodily changes from child hood to now but we r the same but body has changed. that means we r different from body. and if we ask our self that is this hand me ?? is this head is me ? is this leg me ?? is this belly me ?? then answer comes ... no.. no. so who I am ??
must something different from this body. so who I am? the answer is spirit Soul.
othre thing we have to remember is that mind is subtle than gross body and inteligence is more sublte than mind, but false ego is more sublte than intelignece and at last , we are, means the spirit soul is more sublte than false ego.
that means u can not understand mind by gross body because mind is sublte than gross body, similarly , inteligence can not known by mind but by inteligence u can know mind. similarly spirti soul is more subtle than gross-- body, mind , intelinenceand false ego., so u can not understand your self means spirit soul by body, mind , inteligence and false ego. simply we have to realize our self and there is a process to do that.

as a spirit soul , we have possese two kind of body. one is gross body made by earth,water,fire,air,and eather; another is sublte body made by mind, inteligence and false ego. these both body are material. but when living entities dies means gross body dies but , the sublte body carries the Soul one body to another according to our conscious. That means as a sprit Soul we never die , we just changing body one to another.
death means just forgetfullness, otherwise there is question of death. for example , rightnow we do not remember anything about our birth to age of few months. That means for us, it is death because we do not remeber anything of that time by natures arrangement. samilarly, we forgot our past bodies.
but some very very rare people are able to remember their past at least one body. there was some people who did.
so next question is arrive, how we can practically realize that we r not this body but spirit soul. and as a spirit soul what is my natural duty ??
