No, of course not. Say there truly is not one...would you actually live your life in a way that is meaningless? I doubt it, how dull would that feel? Like most of us you'd probably still find your own meaning.
No one likes feeling like life is pointless, so most of us would (and do) find a point to give it.

I don't understand how people make this connection. Why does having an afterlife give life meaning? Doesn't that make life meaningless, since you live forever? I think the fact that we only have one life, one chance at life, makes life much more meaningless. I'm afraid we have things backwards. And that is the problem that religion is causing. A mind virus that is inhibiting it's believers from understanding the truth. The truth revealed by science.

If there is no afterlife then yes existence is useless. If I didn't know about the afterlife I would be living it up! There are a lot of things in life I haven't tried out yet. But there is an afterlife and there is a God. We are to serve Him and do what he asks, He will take care of us and we will go to Heaven with Him.

Actually, I would say no. It makes us appreciate so much more our limited time upon this earth. I appreciate that much more the time I spend with familly and loved-ones knowing that I may not be here tomorrow. With no afterlife to fall back on, there is even more importance placed upon getting this right whilst we are still here.
Personally, I find the thought of some eternal existence to be quite disturbing - I don not WANT to exist forever.

If God exists, if God is benevolent, if God is love, if God is all powerful, then why did he allow that tornado to destroy those mobile homes and kill those innocent children?
Sounds impossible to answer, eh?
Religious empires answer the question by blaming the victims (or by giving some other lame excuse).
Scientific empires answer the question by denying the premise; they simply conclude and espouse that “God does not exist”.
Yet, at some time in our lives, we crave to believe in a protective God; one who will help us, and, hopefully, ever so hopefully, allow us to escape the “D” word; help us escape the consequences of death and go to Heaven.
Wow! How could this be possible?
Don’t ask the Dahlia Lama; he is not a scientist.
Don’t ask the scientists; they have been trained to ignore the concept of God.
Don’t ask the religious empires; they have been trained to answer every question in such a way that will secure and build their empires.
To answer your question you need to simply join what you know with what you feel
You know that God cannot protect everyone every minute of the day.
What you might feel: But he would if he could. Also you might feel that "there is a God".
Now, you need to decide "what makes sense".
My suggestion: God is a loving scientist from a planet that was formed 9 billion years before Earth. (by the way all scientists, even Christian Scientist believe that the Universe was formed 13.7 billion years ago; and that Earth is only 4.5 Billion years old. Making Planet H, (Heaven) 300,000 times more advanced that Earth.
Yes, God has a reconstruction formula for us.
Our purpose: To choose harmony
Why? So that someday, beyond our stay on Earth, we can be good neighbors on Planet H, a harmony loving planet.

why would it be? I don't understand how existence could be meaningless if there is no afterlife. How does the presence of an afterlife imply meaning?

Believing in afterlife have made many to live in the life leading to spiritual growth leaving behind a legacy to the coming generations that there is more than the physical achievement a man has to live for.
Non-believers have mostly utilized their times in the pursuit of developing their sorroundings to enjoy its growth and progress in their present time and leave those things for the next generations to enjoy or to develop further.

Disclaimer: i'm no longer a Christian, i'm a Nordic Heathen. i in my view exchange into very aggravated with the form of Christer that makes a speciality of the afterlife extra effective than this life. This life isn't in basic terms a try, it is likewise a cutting-edge and can be precious as such. What extra ideal way for a demi-god to correctly known how effective this life is than to heal the ill and raise the lifeless? whilst some concentration on "heaven" or "hell" and what might or won't come after this life, they are turning their very own faith right into a dying cult as they are putting extra fee on the subsequent life than they do in this life. that is too undesirable that variety did no longer pay interest to their very own lore and understand /why/ Jesus healed the ill and raised the lifeless. for those that did - stable on them and that i'm hoping they prepare their brothers and sisters to enable pass of the dying fixation. that is my schtick.

Well, everyone's intended purpose is to glorify God and develop a relationship there and believe in salvation which will give you eternal life. If you don't it, (amd it's your choice) then I guess your life could be considered meaningless.
You've got a purpose in life, but it's your choice to take it or not.
