Let's be honest, if you do your job and are a half-way decent person, folks in corporate america really don't care how you wear your hair.

If you must know. I am black and I do relaxer my hair. Lately, I've been wondering why am I a slave to the chemical?

Why do I have arrange my life around my weekly hair appointment?

Why can't I exercise everyday?

Why does rain have to be kryonite to black chicks?

Who decided that my hair was unmanageable and unattractive in it's natural state and why do I agree with that assessment?

Why is kinky or nappy hair considered unkempt?

Does corporate America care about my hair or is this what the ***** believes what "the man" wants to see?

To me it appears that relaxed hair is a perference, not the need that some make it out to be.

I'm wondering what other women and men think.

I went natural for 4 years. I went natural because my hair was damaged, I wanted to try something different, and more natural shops were opening so braids are no longer the only natural hair option. I don't care about what white america thinks of my hair. I put a relaxer in my hair 2 mths ago because I wanted my more styling options. I love cute short cuts, and I wanted that back.

Yes. The beauty ideals of white america do influence blacks. I hate the fact that relaxers are being sold to kids. You don't see L'Oreal selling small boxes of bleach for little white girls, but black girls are told from the start that what they have is less desirable by many people. Such as the Nappy and Good hair comments. But we in general need to stop worrying about what white america thinks.

Your avatar is a black woman. Why do you ask such a crazy question. We perm or relax our hair because it does just that, relaxes it. A relaxer straightens the new growth in our hair. If some didn't do this, if you didn't do this you would find that your hair would take more time to manage.

People care about how you look. Your hair has a big part of how your appearance is. If you don't care, no one else will care. I hope you aren't out there all BAD. You know, looking bad by the head, like a crack head. Their hair looks like they don't care. If it doesn't matter to you then why are you asking this question?

"Corporate America" code name for White Folks don't really care anymore. The only natural hairstyle that might cause a problem at work are a huge afro, and cornrows with every zig zag design you can imagine.

The reasons vary...some do it to look more 'white', to be more acceptable to/in the corporate world or just to manage it more.

Thankfully, I no longer straighten mine and I wear locks. Very liberating.
