Yes it can go bad. Pop corn oil is made from one of three sources corn oil, soybean oil, or cotton seed oil. Or it may be a mixture of all three. Cotton seed oil can last literally for years because its high in natural iodines which act as a natural preservative. Any natural oil will age just like every other natural substance. The oils will begin to smell rancid (like burnt meat). Its a combination of bacterial grownth that is naturally accoring and a chemical breakdown of the oil itself. Thats were the viniger taste is coming from. It wont hurt you because the heating process will kill any harmful bacteria but it wont taste very good. Any cooking oil can go bad after a while but it does last for a long time.

all oils and fats go rancid, it is the oxygen that does it. Smell it first and that will tell you. The nose "knows" as i like to say. You can get a little sick and you can get a lot sick. Here is the problem, the bacterias will live in and multiply the fat environment and the longer it sits at a warm temperature the deadlier it can get, BUT the fact that it was used at a high heat to cook the popcorn means that a lot of the bacteria was probably killed! Best thing to do is throw out the old oils and fats, and from now on store these things in the refridgerator. That is why we keep mayonaise in the fridge, all the fat and any bacteria getting into it if at room temp will multi ply and become very dangerous. You will know with one to four hours however sick the popcorn oil is going to make you. eat some soda crackers or burnt toast without butter, good to settle the stomach.

Throw it out, it has no place being in your kitchen. It's probably just as toxic as Windex cleaner...Get rid of it now, so no one else will try and use it.
