My mother has it and she is on approximately 20 medications and is in a wheelchair. It's a type of disease that is very painful. I hate to see her in such extruciating pain almost all the the time. It also makes her not have as much energy. She can't use her hands and arms to the full such as holding a glass of water or a plate of food. She takes these pain patches for comfort that come in different dosages and still yet she bares with horrible pain especially in her joints. She sees a Rheumatologist for this. There are times when there are discolorations on her skin, especially her face and sores that take a long time to heal. I get very afraid sometimes because with her case she has these "attacks" that are very scary... touch and go I'd say.
And I knew a girl in grade school that had lupus with abnormally huge swollen like cheeks and reddish or yellowish eyes. This was an effect of the medications and failing kidneys. She died before we graduated from eighth grade.
I hate this disease. All I can say is that there are help groups, communities and support than anyone can recieve who has this and any other disease. They can find out by calling 311 the non-emergency number and asking for these services. (That's for the Chicagoland area, not sure if it's the nationwide number though).

my sister-in-law had it. my mom-in-law had a different kind but it falls under the lupus family, too. my ex-hubby seems to have inherited a bit of it but not as bad because their kind of lupus tends to be a female thing-- it affects mostly females.
it manifested itself as some sort of a discoloration on the skin-- kind of like a butterfly effect of a darker color than their original skin color. it made their skin feel tight, mimicking a "young" look, with their skin all thin and stretched out. my mom-in-law's lupus reached her brain before she died.
another kind of lupus i've heard of involves the kidney and needs transplant. a friend of my sister survived-- he had a transplant and is okay now, enjoying life with his wife and two kids.

My mother has it, though I'm not exactly sure what it is. It tends to run in her family.
