http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/h_pylori.html
This is a very common bacteria, that generally affects the lining of the stomach. It encases itself in the lining, which is why its so difficult to kill, not to mention that it can become resistant to antibiotics. It is not a bad idea to have the breath test to determine if the bacteria is dead.
It does NOT cause cancer in most cases, it can however change the lining, and lead to cancer, but no not everyone with H pylori ends up with stomach cancer. Consider that 30% of the adult population have this bacteria in their systems, and that stomach cancer is really quite rare. Honestly, be more concerned about the link to ulcers, because they CAN bleed, and there is nothing good about a GI bleed. Statistics say 1 in 6 develop ulcers with this infection.
It can be transmitted by contaminated water or food, but it is commonly transmitted by person to person contact, because it also is found in the saliva.
I'd talk to your physician, he'd be able to allay your concerns further. Also visit the site that I mentioned at the beginning of this answer.
Good Luck, Tina T. RN

Ditto to what my colleague , Tina responded. I will add my personal experience. Had EGD also, biopsy confirmed H. Pylori. Took 3 anti-biotics & bismuth ( pepto ). This was in 1995. Guess there wasn't a breath test then, because I had to go through another EGD to confirm the treatment worked. It did. I got almost immediate relief, for the chronic gastritis that initially got me to seek consultation. It lasted for 10 years. It seemed that I was invincible, I could eat anything I wanted whenever I wanted & I never had any GI problems. It was GREAT! Then, last year...my symptoms returned. I got another EGD, H. pylori again. This time it was 2 anti-biotics & flagyl with no bismuth. (different doctor ). He wasn't concerned to confirm success after treatment. One year later, still with GI problems. Obviously I will be changing doctors. Point is, the treatment really worked wonders for me. H. Pylori seems to be ubiquitous & re-infection seems inevitable. Either way, I wouldn't change the 10 years of no GI problems for the world. Get the treatment & don't miss a dose. Every gastroenterologist treats it differently, but I suggest the 3 antibiotics w/ bismuth as I did the first time. RN in Califas :)

Always consult your Dr. with questions like these....
H. Pylori is naturally occuring and is in most individuals systems without doing any harm... I've never heard of it leading to cancer though it is an indicator that he may devlop ulcers. Usually H Plyori is treated with antibiotics but if this was ineffective you'll need to follow up with an gastrointernologist. I would just make sure he goes to his regularly scheduled Dr.'s appointments and make mention of the H Plyori during his visits... I would also stay aware of any unusual belly aches he complains of as that may be an indicator that an ulcer is developing... Do some web research on it... www.webmd.com would be a good place to start. Best Wishes!

You should do a web search for H. Pylori for more info, but it is a bacteria that is easily treated with antibiotics. It does not lead to cancer! In some studies it has been shown that H. Pylori may increase the risk of lower intestinal tract cancers (MAY) - and another study found that H. Pylori may actually reduce the risk of cancer in upper intestinal tract. However, the concern is that it may cause ulcers if left untreated, and that is easily prevented with proper treatment. Make sure you voice your concerns to your sons doctor - but don't panic about this leading to cancer because it won't! Good luck and take care.

H pylori is quite common, and most of us do have it in us, it is just a matter of wheather or not it becomes active. Unfortunatly alot of people in hospital or after a surgury will come down with it. Antibiotics are often prescribed to control it but it generally never goes away for good, it just may be under control. And i've never heard of it leading to cancer, but i'm not a doctor so maybe you should make and appointment and go in with a list of questions ready to ask.

I was diagnosed with H pylori 3 years ago. it actually ate a hole through my duodenum(entrance to my intestine). If you gave him the antibiotics religiously and until they were gone than you should be fine. h pylori can come back though. some natural ways of fighting it are with Mastic gum pills(I found on ebay) and flax seed oil pills with Omega 3. Flax seed oil also comes in oil form so you can mix with juice for your little one. and the mastic gum also comes in gum, jellies etc, look around on ebay. the flax seed you can find at wal mart etc... For some people h pylori has no impact but for others (like me) it can eat through your stomach and cause ulcers...which may lead to cancer but that is rare.....try doing a google search for natural ulcer remedies....

Yes he needs to be on a round of antibiotics. They will also probably recommend a good pill for the stomach to protect it such as losec or pantoloc. This should take care of the problem.

Isn't that the bacteria that causes ulcers? I've always heard that antibiotics taken with bismuth will get rid of it. Did he take bismuth?
