I was looking online at remax.com to see some homes in georgia. Omg I couldn't believe how cheap it was I mainly looked in athens and savannah georgia. I saw some homes that had 5 bedrooms,4bathrooms,a tennis court and a swimming pool for $299,000. That is soooooo cheap because I know most houses in chicago that are like that cost around $600,000.

I too am from Chicago and agree that Ga (Savannah included) are very cheap compared to what we are used to. BUT living in Chicago (or one of the close suburbs) is what you are paying for. Chicago has EVERYTHING and ANYTHING you could ask for in a city. Savannah and some of the other cities are way far away from Atlanta. So while the homes may be cheaper you will be farther away from the city. While Atlanta is nice, there is nothing like Chicago, if that's where you're from.

I'm in Midtown Savannah, (just outside of the historic downtown area) and I live in a 100 year old home in great condition. My neighborhood is one of the up and coming ones, and you can get a restored 1900 home for around 400,000 these days. WAY cheaper if you buy and restore yourself, but still pretty cheap for the historical value of the home. In a few years, you won't be able to touch the area with less that 600,000.
If you are finding 5/4 with pool and tennis for 300,000, you are looking in the yucky suburbs of Savannah, and you might get a fabulous home, but you have to consider if you like the neighborhood, and if you would be happy driving 15 minutes on a highway to get close to civilization (if you can call Savannah civilization)
North of Atlanta you can get new 3/2 homes starting at 200/250,000.

In Savannah its not like that at all. The homes are nicely priced $250,000 to $479,000.00, closer to city limits you get more for your $$. Stay away from Atlanta... too much violence! Good luck! You want cheap? Look at Jackson Tennesee, you can get a 3600sft BRAND new home in a classy neighbor hood for $289,900.00 Complete with a fenced 1/4 acre of land!

I've heard Costa Rica is hot. Beautiful and still affordable in many areas. Think you should avoid third world/undeveloped/slowly developing countries. That would pretty much include most of the recommendations you received. Also, depending upon your age, cheap beautiful property might not mean much if you need sophisticated medical assistance.

I lived in Kings Bay, Ga for awhile.
The homes there averaged on 100,00 for nice homes. But look at it this way..The lower the value..the lower the social life you will have. Thats how boring it is there.. You pay for what you get.
