They get itchy on the spots they cant reach (their backs) with their back legs so they use something such as dirt or grass that can itch their backs without using their claws. Its just an opinion, I'm pretty sure i'm right tho.

Dogs have a natural instinct to cover themselves in scents from their environment. Sometimes it is about scratching an itch but for the most part it is about covering themselves in a scent that appeals to them. If you watch your dog after a bath most times they will rub against furniture, people, grass or trees. A dog's scent gland is its strongest source of information.

he's possibly itchy. He gets groomed quite a few cases a *month*? That sounds like an undesirable lot of baths. His skin is possibly dried out and he's itchy. I even have long-coated canines (shelties) and that they are brushed approximately as quickly as a week and bathed approximately each six weeks to 2 months. it is *a lot* often. won't be able to think of of any rationalization why a short-coated canines like a lab/dane blend ought to wish such universal grooming.

Dogs are born with the inherent traits of their ancestors. When dogs were wild, they spun in circles to mat the tall grass down.

Sometimes dogs will do this just because it feels good. Other times they are trying to loosen hair during shedding periods. One theory is also that they are trying to mask another smell with their own, which is usually a territorial thing.

Dogs are predators and as such it's thought they roll in dirt, or dead animals, to disguise their scent so their prey will not detect them.
