Safety: Find the newest model Volvo with low miles (i.e. < 10,000/mi. per year).

Reliability: Find the lowest mile, latest model Honda Accord.

These are my choices for safety first with decent reliability, and reliability first with decent safety.

A used Honda. Civics and Accords are great. Civics have great gas mileage, and insurance is usually cheap because they are safe. A few things to consider are the mileage, and if they have the service records. Its good to make sure regular oil changes and maintenance were done, especially timing belt changes and such. Good luck!

can't really go wrong with a late 90's- early 200's Honda/Acura. They are very reliable maintenance is not that expensive and they are pretty safe cars. I'm sure you could find one in great shape for 7k. good luck

Volvo. I have one that I drove 80km a day to and from work and it was great (I work closer to home now). It is a 1985 740 GLE with 360,000 kilometers on it and I bought it for $900.

You can't go wrong w/ a Honda Civic. You be driving a lot, so you might as well opt for a Civic for reliability.
