I consider that, because evil is a subjective judgment, it does not exist as a defined quality.
There are helpful and harmful acts that are defined as such within their own context. Even the holocaust means nothing to horses, cockroaches, or those who might dwell on other planets, and so they would hardly identify it as evil.
But to homo sapiens, it is a defined moment of the utmost harmfulness to the victims, and also to the human race. We therefore find it exceedingly relevant to our lives.
But evil signifies something universal, and I cannot easily accept a universal standard. Otherwise, exterminators become Satan personified to the cockroaches.

It all depends on whether or not you believe in God. If there is no God, then there’s no such thing as good and evil. We’re just all in a mad dash to pass our genes on to the next generation as quickly as possible. Without God, Hitler’s sense of right and wrong is just as valid as Mother Theresa’s. Without God, right and wrong are based only on society’s norms, and as we all know that changes like the wind.
Some people will try and tell you that we don’t need God to tell us what’s right and wrong. They argue that we as a society are capable of deciding what is best for each generation, but I don’t buy it. Good upstanding members of German society stood by while the Jews were being rounded up. Good upstanding members of our own country stood by and allowed segregation to be a way of life for generations of African Americans. As I said before, without the moral compass provided by God and His eternal laws, there simply is no true right or wrong.
Fortunately, there is a God, and God’s laws are eternal. That means that what was wrong 1000 years ago is still wrong today and will be wrong tomorrow.
As for why we commit acts of evil, I believe that we commit acts of evil due to a lack of self-control. We commit an act of evil when we willfully do something that we know to be wrong. The reason we commit acts of evil is because we put top priority on our own selfish interests. Some people want power, some want money some want even peace, but when we go against what we know to be right then we commit an evil act even if our intetions are pure.
If we go back to the example of segregation, some people were actively trying to prevent the African Americans from having a voice (power). That was an act of evil. However, there were also others who knew segregation was wrong, but they stood by and let unjust laws stand because they didn’t want to deal with the consequences of taking a stand (peace). That was also an act of evil.

An act of wanton hatred. Like rape or murder, would be evil. Any malicious act upon a person.

Evil is the opposite of God and we wanted to see what it would be like to disobey God. We did and now we're stuck on this sinful cursed earth.

evil is to do what one knows is wrong, as enticed by the devil. It is also the failure to do what is right as enticed by the devil.
