I'm 14, and I am thinking hard on getting a lip ring. Can anybody who's had one tell me stuff I would need to know? And if you're against body piercings...don't leave some stupid comment about how it's gross. Thank you.

First off, a lip ring is usually a pretty painless piercing. And its also very quick. No matter how nervious you are, normally it doesn't take more than ten seconds to do.

After you get it done, you're going to have a fat lip for about a day and a half, but thats normal. Also, its going to be a little bit odd when you eat something after you get it pierced, especially if you have a tongue ring since that can sometimes get caught, but you'll figure it out pretty quick.

If possable, see if your piercer could pierce your lip with a Captive Bead Ring instead of a stud, because those don't rub against your teeth and gums as much, and they're less likely to get caught when you chew something.

However, if your piercer does the piercing with a post, keep this in mind: Your gums have to get used to the metal being there, so they will get very sore and irritated looking. Thats completely normal. After a week or so, that irritation will go away. The only reason its there, is because the tissue isn't used to the stud.

Also, while the piercing is healing, you will notice a white, or slightly yellow discharge, and it will get crust around the outside. Clean that off from the outside as soon as you can. The white stuff however, is basically a liquid scab from the inner lip. Its not puss, and its completely normal. However, if that discharge turns green or brown, you could have a small infection.

In the case of an infection, DO NOT take the piercing out, because that could make it worse. Keep up with the regular cleaning schedule, and maybe do it a little more if the infection gets worse.

As far as cleaning, brush your teeth, and gently clean both sides of the piercing with Contact Lense Solution, and use any kind of mouth wash morning and night.

The contact lense solution is also good for cleaning the crust from the outside of the piercing since it loosens it up right away. The solution is made out of the same stuff as your tears, its hypoalergenic, and you can usually get it for pretty cheep at Walmart or any other drug store.

Does it hurt really bad when you get done? not at all The first piercing didn't even bother me at all. The second hurt like crap but that is usually what happens when one gets two piercings back to back in the same area Or is it about the same ammount of pain as getting your ears peirced? I dont have my ears pierced so I wouldn't know. I do know that I have incredibly low pain tolenrance and I wouldn't hesitate to go back and do it again. Can the hole close back up if you leave the lip ring out? depending on how far along the healing is the hole can close up in a matter of hours. Oral tissue heals super quick. The longer you have them the longer it will take to heal up. Or will it be there forever? no the holes will close up you may however end up with 2 barely noticible scars the size of little freckles which is basically what they will look like. And can they get infected easily? oral piercings are less likely to get infected because of the amount of saliva trying to keep you're mouth clean. They do get crusty for about 2 weeks and you gotta clean it off and rotate the rings (if you have rings, this is the most painful part of the experience) gargling sea salt water will help remove the crust and what not. There is also a special mouth wash that you have to buy. I beleive its called biotene or something. Its kinda pricing but you can't have anything with alcohol in it. Also I don't know if you drink beer. But you can't do that for 3 or so months after you get the piercing because the yeast in it can cause infection. There are also some other things you aren't supposed to do. Like make out for a while unless your partner gargles your mouthwash. And for some reason you aren't supposed to get semen near it, I'm not sure why that is but yeah. Once they all heal up you will barely even notice them in there. I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone interested. Honestly, the procedure is nothing to be afraid of. Just make sure you go someplace clean that you know has a good reputation, and make sure they show you the needle they are piercing it with is clean and sterile.

I got my lip pierced about a year ago. And yes, it stings like crazy, which was something I wasn't expecting. My advice would be to talk with the person who would be piercing your lip. Look at their setup, you know make sure the room looks clean and their equipment looks sterile. When I got my lip pierced, it was with a 14g stud, which aggravated my gums. I downsized to a 16g which felt a heck of a lot better after two weeks so you may want to ask about a smaller gauged stud. Also, it takes up to 6 weeks or so for the piercing to heal and in that time you may have a little "crust" on the ball of the stud which is okay. Keep an eye out for infections too. A friend of mine was told to rinse with Listerine after eating, drinking or smoking for the first week or so. Listerine does help to get rid of bacteria, but it can also irritate your lip badly as in my friends case, he got a bad blister from it. Instead of using only the Listerine, I alternated between it and warm salt water.

On a different note, the physician was correct in the earlier answer, it will leave a scar so be sure it is something you really want. Good luck!

omg im in the same situation as you

i heard it hurts like hell and that it can mess up your gum by your tooth, the same way a tongue ring supposedly can chip the back of teeth

but other then that .. go get it .. and clean it a lot so it doesnt get infected

I have my ears pierced, so it would be hard for me to say no to body piercing. So let me just leave you with this thought - Once you start poking holes or inking up yourself in obvious places, you've taken yourself out of regular society. Sure, it will be cool and attention getting for a while - and with no consequence. But when you have to go get a job to support yourself and perhaps a family (and house, kids and car) it'll be very hard for most places to hire you. And, yes, money is that important. It's not everything, but lack of it is.

I am a physician -- but I am giving you my personal opinion. If you get a lip ring, remember that you will NEVER get rid of the scar when you decide you no longer want to wear the ring. If you must pierce, try a place that is not so obvious, and that won't leave such an ugly scar.
