If you turn the key off while still moving it is not good on the mechanical component's.Without assistance from the engine running, fluids don't get where they need to be.It won't destroy the vehicle immediatly, but isn't good over time.
If you mean leaving it in drive(automatic) while going into the store(key off)this is even a worse idea. The car might not move, but it is because the weight of the car against the gear is holding it.It puts alot of stress on the gear in the transmission and will eventually fail. And a car in drive can still roll, there just need to be enough gravity to overcome the compression of the cylinders.
If it is a standard transmission vehicle than putting it in gear is smart, but you must also engage the park brake.Never rely on only putting it in gear, you'll only make that mistake once.

It's wrong to do that for two reasons: It's dangerous and it can be bad on the transmission. The order should go - break to a complete stop, shift into park, release the brake (after pulling emergency brake if on an incline), turn ignition off, remove key.

It's a bad habit. If your ignition kill switch fails, and you start it in drive, the car will lurch forward. You just keep making big deals out of little things like SAFETY. Besides the fact that you treat your cars with more respect than he does, it's usually the other way.

Always put car in park when turned off and you are going to be out of the car. That's how little kids get run over.

No, If you accidentally put it in reverse while going forward with engine running you may damage it. My grandson was three and sitting in the seat beside me. I was doing about 45 and he reached up and pushed the gear lever into revers. Boy did we come to a sudden stop. couple weeks later reverse went out.
