I have a coworker who is about 20 years old and I'd like to get him a Jewish gift. He has recently joined the military and is away from home, living in the dorms. I don't know him all that well, but I would really like to give him a very special collectible of some sort....but not sure what he would really like....any 20 year old Jewish guys out there willing to give me some ideas?? Price isn't a deterrent. Thank you!

Yes, he is very religious and that's why I would want it to be a Jewish gift...he's on his own for the first time and I thought a traditional Jewish gift would be more special to him...one that he could continue to use as he grows older and starts a family and shares his traditions with them.

Why does it have to be something Jewish? Why not just get something for a 20-year-old guy?

hmm.. as a twenty year old religious Jew I need to think about this one...

well I know if I was in his position he probably gets a poor selection of Kosher food

try something like Kosher hard salami that way you can ship it.

though it might be a good idea to call his family first and ask him what in particular he would like

*** ah read the rest of your question again if you want a religious gift is a very good idea to ask his parents what he could use because I have no idea what he dose not have.

a default would be a a gift certificate at artscroll.com or feldheim.com these are Jewish book publishers that offer an anrry of different Jewish books. This might be very helpful to him if he is away from home.

Books is always a lovely idea...
Try to find something to do with Judaism, Jewish history, Jewish philosophy... I'd recommend on the great "Neurotica", an incredibly funny and Jewish complex of stories (http://www.amazon.com/Neurotica-Writers-Melvin-Jules-Bukiet/dp/0767906500).

You can also by him a nice Judaica instrument, such as a Menorah, or a decorated Chanukiyah.

What, exactly, is a Jewish gift? My boyfriend is 22 and a Jew, but his gift needs aren't really different from anyone else his age - it depends on who he is as an individual. If he is especially religious, perhaps a religious gift is in order, but that isn't clear from your question.

There is a very good book called "Gateway to Judaism" by Mordechai Becher. I would very highly suggest it.

if he's on the way to the army, try to get him a good book or something inspirational - so that he shouldn't lose hope!!
