I would guess that would be about 2 miles. Considering that a 'walk' burns about an extra 82 calories per mile, - that's only 175 calories per day.
While it's good start, eating an extra candy bar would nullify the walk. He'd come home hungry and boom that's it!!
I've found that I can easily consume an extra 25 % calories I need per day. A two mile walk is great, - but don't count on the life changing weight thingy you're hoping for.

This years best diet plans can be found at DIETPLANSCIENCE.COM cost free. Does the word "diet and weight loss" immediately make you think of an unpleasant weight-loss regimen? If it did, you are probably not alone. For example, consider the use of the term "diet" in marketing food products—it usually describes foods low in calories, such as diet soda. But there is another meaning of this word. Diet can also refer to the food and drink a person consumes daily and the mental and physical circumstances connected to eating. The Merriam Webster Online Dictionary gives two definitions of nutrition: "the sum of the processes by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food" "the act or process of nourishing or being nourished" While both are correct, the second definition is more inclusive and suggests that food involves many different things, including love, satisfaction, and enjoyment. Nutrition involves more than simply eating a “good” diet—it is about nourishment on every level. It involves relationships with family, friends, nature (the environment), our bodies, our community, and the world. Choices about nourishment are very much linked to other human beings and other life forms on this planet, so healthy (and unhealthy) decisions have great impact. 13 year old lose weight.

Well, even though that's not a real work out, it would be at least 45 minutes away from the fridge or watching TV. It might also get him in the mood to stay out doors or do some other exercise. If he walks hard enough to raise his heart beat, it will also raise his metabolism through out the rest of the day, so it has a lingering effect.

I'm not sure that in today's society it is safe for a 13 year old to walk anywhere by themselves. But the thing you have to remember is to ask your son if he wants to loose weight, because if he doesn't you can do nothing to make him. If he does take away the sodas and junk food and replace it with healthy food and juice. Keep him busy and walk with him.

If you mean diet as in "eating less" than I'd say NO. Teenagers are growing and developing fast and need plenty of energy (aka food).
However, if you mean diet as in "eating healthier" than I'd say YES. Don't reduce the amount of food, just change the type of food! Lots of fruits and vegetables, less junk.
I teach high school and it's horrifying to see the vast amounts of crap these kids stuff their faces with all day, every day. Soda, candy, fast food, more soda, chips, cookies, more soda...it's disgusting. I eat fast food like once every 2 months, if that; some of these kids eat it twice a day!! No wonder obesity is so common. Yikes.

I dont see why not. Remember to lose weight, he has to burn more calories than he consumes. Simple equation. The 45 minutes of walking would definately help.

That sounds like an excellent way to lose some weight. Don't diet too much, just try to make healthier choices.

no, in my personal opinion walking is not a very productive way of weight loss, one thing you can do isnot to allow him to watch tv or play videogames on school nights, and no soda or sweets at all, then make him go outside and play a sport like soccer or biking, its fun and its excersize
