Hi, you can check out the places that you would like to see on www.tourismthailand.org and when you get there, head for a travel desk at your hotel and get a package tour, that may include meals too. Recommended:
Half day river tour on Chao Phaya River. Option for a full day cruise with meal to include the canals too.
Full day tour to Damnoen Saduak floating market, Aprime Rose Garden Cultural and Elephant Show, with lunch.
Half day visit to Grand Palace, Emerald Buddha Temple and Wat Pho Reclining Buddha.
Shopping at Chatuchak Weekend Market. You should be able to do it on Fri afternoon or Saturday from 9am. Pratunam clothing wholesale market too. Maybe to Mah BoonKhrong or MBK Center.
Siam Paragon Shopping Center for its indoor marine aquarium and up-market stores. If not, Next door to Siam Square for those little shops selling one-off clothes.
Night time, head for Suam Lum Night Bazaar, or the night markets along Sukhumvit and Silom Roads. Easy to get there on the Skytrain.
Plan your time based on your arrival and departure. You will need to work travel time as the traffic there is not that smooth unless you are on the highway.
Have a good holiday. You may want to consider extending as the 2 full days there can be rather limited.

3 Days, with Family - not much time you have in hand!
- get on one of the day tours (available from most hotels' front desk), covering most of the major tourist attractions. This night, take the MRT to Suan Lum Night Bazaar - food court with entertainment (live band and big screen for soccer matches) and lots of shops.
- tour again, especially if Emerald Temple, Grand Palace, Floating Market, Elephant Trekking; are not covered in Day 1. Seafood dinner, check with hotel for details. Check out Nana & Patpong (sleazy), if appropriate.
- day 3 is shop, shop, shop! Souveniors to bring home for self and friends. Alight at National Stadium BTS Station for MBK (Mah Boon Krong), a very popular shopping mall. Sells everything here! Nearby are modern shopping malls (Siam Paragon, Central World) for the branded, genuine stuff. Shop till you drop! Reserve this last night for free and easy, for anything you want to do :-)
Enjoy!

My family come over to Bangkok three weeks ago for exactly the same period of time, and there really wasn't enough time to see everything we had planned. What you see will really depend on your own preferences - will you want to spend more time shopping or looking at some of the sites, or a mixture of both?
Let me know if I can help, and good luck.

I go to BKK often and have a condo that I stay at. It's a great place with way more to see and do than you will have time for. Ditch the parents and the tour and hook up with someone who knows the place and have a great time. I have a friend who loves to show people his city and it's sites,,,famous, infamous, day and night.

Bangkok - what a place for a vacation for you and your family.
After a day in Grand Palace, and evening/night in Patpong, then you not want to stay there more. The heat/ traffic/smells will do the rest.

Please contact a tour agency at/from your hotel and go to visit the Rose Garden in Nakhon Pathom (about 30 kilometers from Bangkok), your family can watch a series of Thai cultural performances (something in a nutshell) and ride an elephant safely. A few months ago, my friend and I took our Australian professors to visit there and they enjoyed them.
There you can walk around to see Thai-style houses, trees, orchids and the river. Welcome and enjoy!
