The term spirit sometimes substituted with the word soul refers to the life-giving gift from God, without which a body is no more than a pile of flesh. The spirit comes from God and is originally destined to return to God, but alas God is just and judgement shall fall on those who opposed and/or rejected Him in life; this rejection is basically a failure to comply with one's originally intended plan and therefore all benefits are lost. So, the spirit shall dwell with the father from the righteous, but the spirits of the wicked shall be condemned. The resurrection of the dead will provide all spitrits with a new body, which shall dwell in the new Earth or perish in the eternal flame.

The word "soul" specifically used in the Bible refers to the combination of the body and spirit, a living person in other words.

The Bible says the "soul" the breath of God returns to God, and the dead body eventually returns to dust to await the second coming of Jesus. The Bible also states the dead knows not anything. You are dead until judgment day.

If he is a Christian the soul dies, and your spirit goes to be with the Lord in Heaven. If he is not a Christian his soul goes to a place called Hades and will remain there until the judgment day then be called before God and cast into Hell.

Since the substance of Soul is not physical, it is untouched by the death process. So the answer is "nothing happens." As the smoke clears in time, this concept will appear less obscure.

It teleports to where it is suppose to be. It leaves the shell (the body) and enters the spiritual world where it awaits the next lifetime/judgment/heaven-hell/or it just rests (sleeps dormantly) until God calls it awake on the day of judgment. Basically, it leaves the body and does whatever you believe comes next. No one on Earth really knows. People dont live to tell.
