Ages 13-17

Teenagers are developmentally ready to handle almost any chore in the home. At the same time a teenager’s schedule can sometimes become quite hectic, leaving little time for chores. Make sure that the workload of your teenagers is manageable.

Some chores teenagers are capable of in addition to the ones below…

Vacuum and mop.
Take out trash.
Fold and put away laundry
Help wash the car.
Learn to wash dishes.
Help prepare simple meals.
Clean the bathroom.
Rake leaves.
Operate the washer and dryer.
Replace light bulbs and vacuum cleaner bags.
All parts of the laundry.
Wash windows.
Clean out refrigerator and other kitchen appliances.
Prepare meals.
Prepare grocery lists.

Remember that children mature at their own pace and not all kids will be capable of advanced chores at the same age, just as some children may be ready for more difficult chores at a younger age. The most important guidelines are supervision and evaluation of your child’s needs and abilities.

A 13 year old boy should be taught the skills he'll need for later in his life. Why not have him start doing his own laundry, taking out the trash, doing dishes etc. I know that when my husband and I got married I realized very quickly that some of these skills were lacking and it took a lot of work to change his bad habits. Also, I wouldn't pay him to do these basic things. If you're interested in him having ways to earn an allowance you should have seperate chores that are different than these such as organizing the garage, washing the family car, mowing the lawn, etc. Basic chores should be done because at some point as a member of the household you must learn to contribute not because you want to get paid.

Taking out the trash, being responsible for vacuuming one or two rooms in the house, unloading the dishwasher or washing dishes, quick clean-up of the bathroom, etc. Of course you wouldn't want all of these to be regular everyday chores lol, but those are the kinds of things my parents gave to me as responsibilities throughout the week when I was a teenager. With whatever chores you wanted to give your son, you could make a chore chart stating one responsibility for each day of the week, and can check off boxes when the chore has been completed... or you could just do an "on-demand" thing where you ask them to get something done after school/before dinner etc. If you ask me, taking out the trash is a good chore to give away! I'm short and wimpy and I hate doing it lol! Good luck!

RE:
what are some good chores for a 13 year old boy?

Cleaning his room (and keeping it clean), taking out the trash, dishes, vacumming and teach him how to do his own laundry. He doesn't have to do his own laundry necessarily, but at least teach him the basics. Chores are a way of teaching responsibility, and a way to teach life skills. He will need to know how to keep his place clean when he gets on his own. Try a chore jar, or a list that he can choose from (each with a number of points that have to be accumulated each week), that way he gets a variety of skills.

At 13, he should be old enough to handle any household chore. I'd recommend yard work, taking out the trash, helping clean the house including clening up after himself.

Loading or unloading the dishwasher.
Feeding the dog/cat.
Cleaning his room.
Sweeping the patio/porch/stairs etc.
Raking leaves.
Taking out the garbage.

All or some of those things on a regular basis. For example, doing the dinner dishes 3 nights per week....but not every night, that would be too much in my opinion.

Good Luck!

Well he is surely ready for trash duty. If you have pets, he should help with the feeding and watering. Give him options... vacuum, sweep, dishes, dust, clean bathroom. Give him choices and tell him that he will be in charge of the two that he picks. Of course then you have to go behind him for awhile and make sure it's done right!
