I adopted 2 kittens (same litter), they are 3 mos. old. They were wormed, had some starter vaccines given and were checked by a vet. They are both playful, active and have a good appetite. But the female (Lola) is having loose, light brown, VERY stinky bowel movements. Her brother (Dojo) is fine. We are going to the vet next week. I am aware that diarrhea is common in kittens, but would like to help her in the mean time. I have heard that rice and chicken helps, I have also heard that plain yogurt helps. Right now they are being fed canned food and IAM's dry kitten food. Lola doesn't appear to be feeling ill. Any suggestions?

Chicken & rice is good as a bland diet (just make sure that it's well cooked) There are also commercially made bland diets that you can buy. But don't change the diet completely...better to try mixing 3/4 of their existing food with 1/4 new food initially, then gradually changing. As someone above said, a diet change coud just make things worse. Make sure they've got easy access to water (don't offer milk or anything like that as it will just make the diarrhoea worse)

If it's infectious, then chances are that Dojo is probably infected as well. Keep a close eye on them both- I don't know when your vet appointment is, but kittens with diarrhoea can dehydrate very, very quickly. If either starts looking lethargic or ill, it would be an idea to make your vet appointment sooner, or call an emergency centre.

Rice and chicken are a good choice for giving more substance to her stool. I am glad you will take this up with the vet next week. Dehydration from the diarrhea is the biggest concern with a kitten. So if this goes on through Sunday and into Monday I think you should get her into the vet sooner.

Canned pumpkin (not pie mix with sugar and spices) can also help with both constipation and diarrhea. You can freeze some of it in ice cube trays and have a little dose to thaw out when needed. I can't guarantee she will like it and it can go in her canned food. It can't hurt the other kitten either.

It is common for kittens to get diarrhea...that being said, there is a lot that can cause it in kittens. Intestinal parasites, changes in diet or a serious problem can be the culprit. I would definitely advise taking her to the vet so they can check a stool sample for parasites. Do not change her food right now or try to introduce a bunch of new things, since that could only make it worse.

You must get this kitten to a vet NOW - no-one else might be ready to aid her get higher. It sounds very similar to cat flu, that's deadly. There are finance choices on the vet - speak to them. At the tip of the day, if you are now not ready to protect a kitten appropriately while it is ill, you must signal it over to the experts. Anything not up to this or going to the vet is absolutely irresponsible, unfair at the kitten, and also you threat severe consequences - which could surely price greater than going to the vet at first could!

I would try a different cat food, and if that doesn't work and she still has diarrhea, going to the vet as she may need speacil food. And allthought that may cost a more then you want you can mix it with normal food to make it last longer.

Bring a fresh poop sample. They can have coccidia. It is very common in kittens and one can be showing signs while the other does not.
Maybe cutting out the canned would help too. They do not need it.

Go to www.KittenCare.com
Sour cream helps my kitten when she has an upset stomach, and so does Pepto Bismol.
