Yes, a lot of people do this when it is cold so that their loved ones can stay warm or so their car will keep running. I don't blame you for being paranoid, I'm the same way about other things, but in this case it's no big deal. It would be worse if he turned it off, but had a pickup and pumped gas into a can in the back of the pickup without taking it out and setting it on the ground. Static electricity can spark a fire that way. I saw a video of this recently.

This is definatly a bad habit and I've done it myself. It is wrong for most of the reason's stated so far,but I am surprised noone mentioned the vehicle's emission's system. If this is a newer vehicle than it has a return line fuel system with an emission/vapor canister.New vehicle's are required by law to monitor emission's and throw a check engine light(code) when everything is not reading correctly.Return line fuel system's cut down on gasoline emission's,which is why the EPA mandated they be monitored by On-board diagnostics. There are pressure sensor's that read the pressure in the tank compared to what has been purged in the closed system. If you leave your gas cap off while you are fueling and the system runs it's regular diagnostic cycle then it will read a low pressure situation causing an emission's code(check engine light). While it's no big deal whatsoever and will not harm your engine....You will have to pay the dealer to erase the code from your computer to turn your check engine light off.
So if nothing else, tell him he will have to pay a mechanic if it throw's the code.
Oh yeah, and he could blow everyone up!!

once you have become oil on your distributor, that could desire to be the criminal. And definite, it incredibly is a difficulty the place your automobile might run in simple terms approximately completely at idle yet does not run properly whilst attempting to strengthen up in the experience that your distributor has oil in it. regrettably, that isn't the only a threat situation. It sounds such as you have addressed extremely some the flair motives, so i'm thinking in case you will possibly have yet another situation like a blown head gasket. it incredibly is incredibly helpful to learn your oil -- if there is radiator fluid on your oil it incredibly is a constructive sign of a blown gasket or a cracked head. My suggestion is to commence with the distributor and notice if changing that or getting the oil out solves your situation. If that doesn't paintings, verify your oil and verify all your gaskets for a threat leaks. If that doesn't paintings, subsequently you would be ultimate off taking it to the broking and paying them the $80 5.00 or besides the fact that it expenses to tell you what is incorrect.

thats a hard one
if he uncapped the gas tank while the car was running, the fuel pressure woudl act as a vaccumm and suck air into the fuel tank, this is bad because when air reacts with fuel it acts as a catalyst for a process known as fuel kenestic vaporization, or FKV for short. Now when FKV starts, all the fuel in the tank will then turn into a clear liquid substance that burns as well as water, this requires that you remove the fuel tank and buy another. the metal will have become contaminated by the quadrilecktic shock caused by FKV. Also fuel lines, piston rings and power steering pump will need to be replaced. when fuel is allowed to cuadralicate it will force itself throug the engine into the power steering fluid due in part to their opposite electronegative forces. this will cause the power steering pump to become red in color, this is due to it eating away your steerign shaft., im sorry to break this news to you, maybe try sellignt he car to someoen else, jsut dont tell them what you did

the reason that you are supposed to turn your car off is a safety issue. It is so nothing catches fire or causes the gas fumes to ignite. Did you know you can weld a gas tank if it is full of gas because it is the fumes that are explosive not the liquid gas?

The only reason they say to turn your car of while fueling, is in case there is a spark, which could case a flash fire or explosion. It won't hurt the car to leave running while fueling, unless one of the thing I mentioned happens.

Your car will be perfectly fine. My friend has done it so many times I can't count that high. They only tell you to turn it off for safety reasons. What are you trying to do? Make the gas station explode? LOL.

It is best to turn it off when fueling. things can happen in the right enviornment to cause a flame up.
If he continues to fill up while it is running, remove yourself and the kids from the car until he is finished.
This way if something happens he will be the only one in danger
