In addition to using the pain medication of your choice, sleep on an extra pillow to elevate your head. Sleep on the side that does NOT have a toothache. If that doesn't work, you can move to a recliner or the sofa so you can keep your head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain. This might help you make it through the night until you can see a dentist.

A toothache is most likely due to an infection. Tooth infections can be very serious since the teeth are rooted so close to blood streams, and an infection can easily run through your body. For that reason, it is wise to see a dentist promptly.
In the meantime, try placing a cotton ball soaked in hydrogen peroxide on the affected area. The bacteria that causes dental infection are anerobic, meaning they live with out oxygen. The peoxide breaks down into oxygen that actually kills the bacteria. This may do the trick. But beware... Peroxide is harsh. Only do this for 10-15 minutes at the most for a couple of times.
If your tooth hurts a lot, you really need to see a dentist. It could also just be a bad cavity.
Good luck.

If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten mins several times a day. The pain will lesson greatly.

My dentist highly suggests Orajel for a toothache, although I hardly ever get them because I'm always taking real good care of them. Anyway, rub some Orajel on the surface of your hurting tooth and it will try to deaden the area, and that'll hold you until you get to a dentist.

Take Ibuprofen (if your not allergic), it will help reduce inflamation and works better than Tylenol for toothaches. Call a Dentist for an appointment ASAP. The sooner you see someone for treatment the better chance you have at saving the tooth and you will avoid more pain and swelling.

Take Ibuprofen, try a ice bag on your face near the tooth- or maybe a heating pad alternately...call a Dentist as soon as possible. The cause could be anything really. If it still hurts with Ibuprofen, alternate with Tylenol. Watch for recommended dosages. It's amazing the type of pain teeth cause. I feel you're pain!! Good luck!!

Try a warm salt water rinse, a tsp of salt in 8 oz of very warm water. Rinse for about 30 seconds and that might relieve your pain. This is an old remedy used in the Ozarks. It works for me until I can get to a dentist.

Get some over the counter Orajel and apply it to the tooth and avoid hot and cold drinks. Take Motrin or Tylenol for pain.
Most importantly, go see your dentist :P

If you see any swelling in your face around the area of the tooth please make sure you get to a doctor if you cannot see a dentist right away. You will need a course of antibiotics. Any infection in the mouth can spread quickly through the blood stream straight to the heart.
