Like, should I study really hard, learn an instrument, get closer to family, get friends and party, etc?

How do you keep yourself busy to give your life purpose or keep yourself inline?

The great thing is, you can choose your own purpose. I'm not some sort of "ancient wise person." But at 36 years old, my advice to you is RELAX. If you feel the purpose of your life is to enjoy yourself while you're here...then that's your purpose! If you feel it's necessary to do something GOOD for other people, then you have plenty of time to figure out what that is.

You don't need to be Mother Theresa. You don't need to be a brilliant musician or scholar. You only need to feel good about yourself and about what you're doing with your time. And the truth is, you have plenty of time to have many purposes...make yourself happy, make someone else happy, learn something worthwhile as soon as you decide what YOU think is worthwhile.

For some reason, I find it oddly satisfying to make things with my hands. To that end, I knit, make jewelry, sew a little, and do some embroidery. I haven't created a work of art, I haven't changed anyone's life. But I HAVE handed out hand-knitted hats to homeless people when they approached me for money and I have proudly worn sweaters I knitted and just WAITED for someone to say "nice sweater" so I could tell them I made it.

Yeah...Gandhi I ain't. And probably neither are you (no offense intended). But so what?

I suggest you do all the things you listed above. Yes, study hard...it will do you good in the long run, if only because it teaches you to be persistant. Yes, learn an instrument, yes get closer to your family, they are valuable and you should take advantage of the opportunity to be near them. Yes, go out and party and have a blast.

Staying in line isn't really necessary...I mean, you shouldn't hurt others or put yourself in danger, but getting a little "out of line" never hurt anyone. Whose drawing the lines anyway?

Good luck. :)

Just think about yourself and stop trying to be what everyone thinks you should be or do. Now picture you in a house living alone. Would you garden, do art work, have lots of pets, no pets, live messy or clean? The only way you can find purpose in your life is to figure out what YOU like to do and how you would like to see yourself. Be realistic - I'd like to be rich enough to buy a farm, but my window sill is full of plants and they bring me happiness. I wish I had lots of friends, but I am smiley and friendly to people who come in to my work. These give me joy and a purpose in my life.

Do what is right no matter who is around. I think you have some great ideas already! Do something special for someone which will not only make them feel good but also make you feel good. Knowing you have helped so many people and are a special part of many lives can make life feel great! Also remember to challenge yourself and GO FOR IT!!! You sound like a great person, Good luck with your future ventures, God bless you! :)

What do you care about and what interests you? If you are doing things you THINK you SHOULD be doing and liking and not the things that you really do, then you are living someone else's purpose and not yours. When you can answer those two questions, do it. You'll find that when you do what you love and care about, you won't work a day in your life!

Aristotle had it... here it is in a nutshell... everything is a virtue in moderation... too much courage and you're reckless, but not enough and you're timid... etc. So try to find balance in your life... always be learning and working, but not so much that you miss out on the fun life has to offer. Focus on enjoying your friendships, but not so much that you lose your sense of self. The purpose should take care of itself.

You should consider volunteering. Helping other less fortunate people help give meaning and purpose to your life. It will make you feel good about yourself and help someone who truly needs it. Find something that truly touches your heart and volunteer.

I recommend the author Eckhart Tolle -- his latest book is about finding your life's purpose and is a national bestseller.

get involved in service. it will draw your attention away from your problems and focus on someone else's. besides Ive always found out more about myself through helping other people than concentrating on myself.
