Without a question of a doubt, the Maracana soccer stadium im Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

One of the world's largest stadiums, Maracanã was built for IV World Cup of Football that happened in Rio in 1950. Brazil unfortunately lost to Uruguay that year, but today it's the only nation in the world to hold 5 titles.

Soccer is the national sport in Brazil, and the stadium is often filled to capacity with more than 90,000 people when there is a major match, and the official record is of 183,341 spectators in 1969. This is where Pelé made his 1,000th goal.

Maracanã is also used for mega-shows every now and then, and artists like Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones have already performed here. Next door to it are Maracanãzinho, a smaller bowl with a capacity of 20,000 and the Olympic Stadium Célio de Barros, often used for international competitions.

Cardinals | Stadium on list of most impressive sports structures
Wed, 22 Feb 2006 11:12:21 -0800

BusinessWeek has named the new stadium of the Arizona Cardinals as one of the top 10 sporting structures in the world. Cardinals Stadium was the only building in the United States on the list.

The Roman Colloseum was the work of a brilliant and energetic civilization. The Roman Colosseum was the work of a cruel and brutal civilization. Both are true. The Roman Colosseum was one of the most extraordinary buildings in the ancient world, a work of engineering genius whose design is imitated every time a modern stadium is built. Yet, what went on inside this building is difficult to comprehend. Over the centuries, tens of thousands of slaves, prisoners of war, and criminals were slaughtered in the Colosseum for the entertainment of over 50,000 cheering fans. So many animals were destroyed in gruesome "hunts" staged in the arena that entire species disappeared from the Roman colonies of North Africa. This book interweaves the impressive story of the construction of this remarkable building and the sobering tale of the "games" that went on inside it. It reveals an entire civilization in all its genius and its brutality.

DOHA (AFP) - The ASPIRE Academy of Sports Excellence venue is the work of French architect Roger Taillibert and funded by the oil and natural gas revenues which have turned this tiny Gulf state into one of the richest countries in the world.

It is a staggering 290,000 square-metre structure which houses under its giant roof a full-sized artificial grass football field and a five-a-side version, a 200m athletics track, an Olympic-size swimming pool and diving pool, a gymnastics hall, a sports games hall, 13 table-tennis courts, 3 contact sports mats, 8 fencing strips and 2 squash courts.

If required, competition could be under way in each of these sports at the same time with the whole complex lit up and air-conditioned by the site's own power station.

The Colosseum in Rome, Italy. It was built around 2000 years ago. The Colosseum remained in use for nearly 500 years with the last recorded games being held there as late as the 6th century, well after the traditional date of the fall of Rome in 476. As well as the traditional gladiatorial games, many other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles,( it could be flooded), animal hunts, executions and dramas based on Classical mythology. Fantastic!!

impressivity is a subjective quality... meaning it's based on opinion.

i say Maracana, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. it's fall apart now, but it was the largest stadium in the world, held something like 200,000 people.
