Hmm. I don't think it's outright rude, but a little bit rude. Cashiers seem to like genuine "hello, how are you, how is your day going so far?" smalltalk. I think they probably are overlooked and neglected, and if you acknowledge them, you might brighten their day. But you can't really do that with your ipod on. :o)

YES!! by the same token, it is very rude to be on the phone and expecting the cashier to wait until you've finished your call...move aside and let the other patrons check out....I see a lot of customers come into the store, ask for a sales person, then keep my sales rep on hold until they've finished their call

well I would take the ipod earphones out and say hello to the cashier personally but cashiers can be rude also so if they don't want to acknowledge you then you should feel free to listen to the Ipod

Depends on the cashier. If its a nice outgoing person then its rude. If its just a person who doesnt say anything to u then no its not rude.

Yes, It is. Imagine you are waiting to talk to someone, and the other person is talking on a cellphone or listening to walkman(IPOD, Discman, etc). What would you do ???
Isn't that a rude gesture ?? I think it is.

Yes. The cashier expects a conversation, because money is involved; and she/he wants the correct amount, and so do you.

Yes it is. And so is talking on a mobile phone when paying. Customers often complain that cashiers are rude and dosy, but that kind of thing is just as bad. Not to mention that if you are listening to music or taking on a phone that you aren't concentrating on getting your part of the payment right, causing delays and holding things up for other customers.

well it is if it's on both ears, it's fine as long as it is only in one ear and the music isn't loud enough for others to hear
