My doctor told me my cholesterol is borderline, he told me I need to go on low fat, and low cholesterol diet. Any tips? Also, what is the max amount of cholesterol you should have in a day? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hiya! A doctor told me flax seed oil is "the magic bullet" for cholesterol. It tastes a little like cucumbers, but I take it everyday.

I don't remember the max cholesterol recommended, but I can give you a few tips. No meat or cheese is best, but if you have to choose a meat: Turkey, fish, chicken are better then red meat, duck and pork is REALLY bad. Soy milk is better than milk. Wheat bread is better than white bread, or Multi Grain. Nuts, and Olive oil, Canola oil have good fats in them. And egg whites are okay, the egg yolks are the part that has cholesterol. Butter is bad too. Margarine is not good, nor is Butter. Try to find the non hydrogenated spreads, with no trans fats. Trans fats are known to raise bad cholesterol levels

It is possible to increase your cholesterol level on a cholesterol free diet. This means that what you eat is important. For instance, if you consume a diet that contains a lot of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (independent of the oil type) you will increase your cholesterol level. Eat a diet that contains less than 25% of calories from fat, avoid fried foods, avoid eating anything that contains partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, and limit your caloric intake to whatever will maintain your weight, and you will lower your cholesterol level.

Depending on your weight, age, etc. the maxium amount of cholesterol may vary, but staying under 300 mg is healthy.

As a side note, being a vegetarian, my cholesterol rarely tops 20 mgs, so I might suggest staying away from red meats and large amounts of dairy and eggs.

High glycemic foods are what drives one's cholesterol up. Stay away from foods with sugar and white flour.
