Are pitbulls as vicious as some say they are? I know they've been banned in Denver for instance.

I am wondering cause I want to get a friend for my australian shephard puppy and found some pitbulls at Petsmart. Worried the pitbull might bite people or attack my chihuahuas and kittens.

If they are vicious, what type of dog would be great play buddy for my puppy? I dont want another australian shephard because they are so much work and this one jumps on me and it hurts like hell.

Good for you to ask the question. Sounds like you should have researched Aussies prior to getting one!! Pitbulls as a breed have high prey drive, and generally (not always) may show smaller creatures or other dogs aggression. If you don't have the energy for an aussie, then definitely do NOT get a pitbull -- these dogs need STRONG LEADERSHIPand consistency.
Think about ways to get your aussie more exercise -- daily walks, for instance. A lab or lab mix may be a good choice for you...... if you have the time and energy. People too often forget that ownership of a dog is not only a priveledge, but also a RESPONSIBILITY -- not just to the dog, but also to your neighbors and community. Get a pet that suits your lifestyle, not just one b/c you like the way it looks.......

Pitbulls can be sweet and kind dogs. They are not naturally viscous any more than any other breed of dog. They were breed to fight bulls for human entertainment and other blood sports but they have to be trained to this behavior. Pitbulls have a bad reputation because they have a "locking" jaw and a tenacious spirit. The only vicious pit bulls I have ever seen were purposefully trained that way by humans. If you do decide to get a pitbull you should invest in dog obedience classes since these dogs are strong and willing to learn.

However, instead of supporting pet stores- why don't you go look at your local humane society. Humane societies often have a larger selection of breeds to choose from.

I have 2 pit bulls one is 3 y/o male and a 7y/o female. I have had them both since puppies I don't think the 7 y/o has ever growled. My mom and grandmother both have 20 lb terriers and the 3 y/o is afraid of them when they bark.
Pit bulls are a breed that needs A LOT of attention and they are very needy and have to be near or on you all the time. If can find a puppy that no other human has messed with and introduce the dogs and if they get along try it. they have so many good qualities that are overlooked. Do the research!! I wouldn't trade my pits for anything.

Not all Pit bulls are vicious. I have one and she is really sweet . However if you are thinking about adopting one there are some things you should know.

Pits do best in a one dog home. I only have the one dog but I also have 5 cats and 5 rabbits and they all get along fine.

They have a lot of energy and I would not recommend living in a small apt or city. they need a lot of exercise and room to run.

Finally please don't believe all of the All pit bulls are dangerous and that all pits bite they don't bite any more than any other breed of dog.

Don't let people WHO HAVE NEVER OWNED PIT BULLS try and give you "expert" advice. Should I give someone advice on how to sky-dive, if I've never been sky-diving before? Of course not, so obviously ignore people who are illiterate on the breed. I own 5 pit bulls, and 3 cats. And my cats run the house. So, listen to those who own pit bulls, and ignore all the pit bull-prejudice. And ignore all the false myths about them, such as: "their jaws lock!", or, "their brain grows larger than their skull, which is why they turn on their owners!" These backyard myths are not scientific fact, nor credible in any way.

No, pit bulls are no more vicious than my neighbor's "vicious" dalmation. With constant socialization, exercise, attention, and proper correction, your new pit bull will grow up to be a loving, loyal, and wonderful companion to you and your german shepherd. I would advise having your pit bull fixed though, you don't want mixed puppies. Don't be worried about your pit bull "attacking" anyone, unless you plan to leave it chained up all day without any socialization and exercise. This is often why pit bulls attack people. And ANY dog will attack under these circumstances.

Was there any paperwork exchanged when you gave him this dog? If not, and if you have paperwork or vet records to prove it was yours in the first place, you may be able to get away with going back for the puppy. Dogs are property all over the place, so it could be seen as stealing - but not if you are on his property legally, and tell him your are taking the dog in place of reporting him for documented animal cruelty. You know this guy, and what he is capable of now - you can either choose to take matters and the puppy into your own hands and confront him with what you know, or call the local animal cruelty investigators anonymously - at the risk of finding he has scuttled the puppy. Whatever you do, stay safe yourself. People who would do anything cruel to a puppy are also capable of doing bad things to people at whom they are angry. Whichever you choose, please be carful, and be fast.

I think instead of getting another dog you should first take your puppy to obedience school and then if he needs friends go to your local dog park ...if one dog is alot of work imagine 2 puppies at once.....pitbulls are great dogs and can get along with any other breed if socialized and properly trained....if you dont have the time or patience please rethink the friend idea!!!!!
