I think I should look at the signs at the DVD player itself, but what are the meanings of the signs? I already looked at the owner's manual and the website of the manufacturer but none of the two mentioned the what region can my DVD player play. (my DVD player is NOT a recorder.)

If the owners book does'nt say anything, then it isn't. The US is region 1. There are different numbers for different areas in the world. Asia, Europe, South America...I forget how many there are. 7 or 8 ? This idea came from Hollywood. They wanted movies to be shown in other countries when they wanted them to be released. It's all about money. My friend in Japan sent me a DVD. I got an error message when I tried to play it. Funny thing is, a VHS tape from Japan will play fine. Japan is region 2. You can try to google "DVD region codes", or something like that.
