Oddly enough I just saw a special on this very subject today. It was a very basic principle where there was a gyroscope in the "nose" of the rocket and just enough fuel (calculated precisely) to reach London. There was no precision as to WHERE they would land, the idea being of terrorizing the population. Over 24,000 residents were killed or injured in 1944 from V2 attacks.

Once they were pointed in the right direction it was a question of how much fuel they had to cover the distance..
They reached supersonic speeds and there was no warning of their approach before the massive explosion.

Devoted Nazi General Walter Dornberger and German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun were two men with a vision. The drive, energy and resourcefulness of General Dornberger, mated with the ingenuity and passion of von Braun, created one of the greatest technological achievements of this century. The fact that this achievement was the product of the ruthless regime of Nazi Germany, and the fact that many thousands of people died as a result of its production and deployment, taint the image of what otherwise would be considered a monumental triumph.

Read Space Race. Its about how the Russians and the Americans each rushed in after WWII to gather up as many scientists as they could. Its amazing how much modern technology has its foundation in Nazi Germany.
