My son was made to hug another male student after a disagreement. According to others the two boys initially put their arms on each other's shoulders and the teacher is to have told my son that he was to hug the other boy as if he were a "big ole teddy bear." My son said the entire class laughed at him. He is already having problems with the others calling him "fatty" and I think this teacher was very insensitive. She is the one that called our attention to the fact that he was being picked on in the first place. What do you think?

ABSOLUTELY NOT

You should speak to your principal.. That was VERY inappropriate in addition to being insensitive to YOUR sons needs.

In fact the discipline shoud have been handled in private not in front of everyone anyway!

If you do not want this to happen again I suggest a proactive approach and a meeting with both the teacher and principal to let them know you do not wish this to ever happen again and why.

Once you make that clear if it does go on again you go to the school board.

The fact is they are walking on thin Ice by forcing another child to have any physical contact with another one period....

gOOD Luck

Sometime's teacher's cross the line and I think this is just a case like that. You know teacher's are people too and I have come to not trusting in too many people because they tend to think and act a little strange. I for one wouldn't have done this and I don't think it was right for your son's teacher to do so either! You need to contact the principal and let them know what happened and let them know you don't believe in this kind of punishment and it shouldn't happen again or you will take stronger action like calling the school board, or the media! Also I would insist on your son's teacher to apologize to your son and the other boy in front of the whole class just to see what it feels like to feel humiliated in front of a class of student's. Keep an eye on this teacher, sound's strange! Oh by the way tell your son what I told my son" just punch the idiot in the nose" and yes he might get suspended but he'll get respect! It seems the only thing the idiot's in this world understand! Sad isn't it?

Let it go, if any further issues happen I would report it. Maybe the teacher for what ever reason thought it was the best way to get though to them. The whole thing sounds creepy to me, but its nothing to get the teacher fired over or to cause the teacher to dislike you son. I have made my kids shake hands for fighting, never hugging though as a hug should be sincire.

I think you should sue! I would never condone that behavior in the classroom. Your son has been affected and humiliated by the teacher and you definately have a case if you want to sue. I think outsiders are a little too free with the lives of children that are not theirs. Teachers cannot force children to "conform" to what values or morals or beliefs they have...it is also illegal because children are mandated to be there but the teacher has the choice not to be.

Thats invading a persons individual rights, that is the problem with schools today, they beleive that teachers and adults are sooooo much better and deserve more respect that the students which is utter bullshit, Your son should not have been asked to hug him.

wrong, wrong, wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all forcing a child to touch or be touch when they don't want to is ILLEGAL. In Canada we have a no touch policy, to protect both the kids and teachers. I was told it is especially hard for teachers in the lower grades where kids are still 'huggy'. That teacher would have been fired here or at least suspended. I think I would take this to the next level and look for a new school next year.

Teacher is sick!!! You cannot allow a teacher to encourage kids to invade each others body space. May be acting out of best motives but sounds like she has violated your son through a 3rd party!!! No No No this is just so wrong!!

Regardless of the teacher's reason for having them hug, I would inform her that this is not acceptable to you and she is never to ask your son to take part in this again. Tell your son that in the event the teacher makes another request for him to participate in this form of apology he is to politely refuse and come home and inform you. If need be take it to a higher level.

This is what I would do.

Good luck.

This teacher must be 187 years old. That is very "old school" thinking. A report to the proper authorities probaly won't make a difference either. (Although, I do believe you should.) Wasn't it enough that this teacher embarrassed your son? Then to have to hug his assailant??? Next they will have rape victims hugging their rapist.

You are correct in your thinking. Put an end to it before he or she does permanant damage to your precious child.

Good Luck!

this is pretty "old school" for the teacher
simple apology is good
if this conflict repeats often with the same two children...and they are old enough to write...have them write about the conflict and how best to solve the disagreeement then write apology notes to each other
