Jesus Christ founded the only Catholic Church, as the channel of salvation for all mankind. He never authorized the founding of any other Christian churches. In fact, He plainly stated that it was not His will that this should ever happen.

There are hundreds of documents by the Catholic Church and about the Catholic Church, by that name, in every century since the Apostles. That means several centuries before Constantine was born. Constantine founded nothing. He merely legalized what had existed continuously from the time of the Apostles.

In the early second century, the Church at Rome started deviating from the apostolic Church of God. Other churches rebuked her, but she refused to return to the teachings of Christ and the Apostles.

In response, the church at Rome 'excommunicated' all those apostolic churches for not following in her error; in effect, though, she excommunicated herself from the Church of God.

This happened in the end of the second century. All the Churches of God rebuked the church at Rome for this action, even the ones who sided with her.

The Church at Rome had already been deviating from the apostolic teachings since the early to mid-second century, but the capstone to the apostasy came when the Roman emperor, Constantine (the chief priest of the Roman Sun worshipers until his deathbed), intervened in church affairs and determined what doctrines he would enforce. Some historians consider this the beginning of the Catholic Church, which was in 325 A.D., since many churches, who continued in the apostolic doctrines, parted from her at that time. Sylvester was bishop of the church at Rome at that time, though he is depicted as a puppet, with no real conviction of his own.

So, the best answer to your question would be Emperor Constantine, as the founder of the Catholic Church.

Jesus Christ is the "chief cornerstone" (the 'Rock') in the foundation upon which the true Church of God is built. His Church still keeps the apostolic teachings today.

Saint Peter and Paul.

"The ancient Christian Churches, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox, consider Simon Peter a saint, and the first Bishop of Rome, even if they differ on the significance of this for the position of the see of Rome and of the Pope in present-day Christianity."

"Since, however, it would be too long to enumerate in such a volume as this the succession of all the churches, we shall confound all those who, in whatever manner, whether through self-satisfaction or vainglory, or through blindness and wicked opinion, assemble other than where it is proper, by pointing out here the successions of the bishops of the greatest and most ancient church known to all, founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious apostles, Peter and Paul, that church which has the tradition and the faith which comes down to us after having been announced to men by the apostles. With that church, because of its superior origin, all the churches must agree, that is, all the faithful in the whole world, and it is in her that the faithful everywhere have maintained the apostolic tradition."

I waited to see some of the answers. None so far was even close.

Even though the early Church had been drastically changed by around 350, the best answer would be Gregory around 590.
Jesus nor Peter ever had anything to do with the Catholic church.

Tradition teaches that it was St Peter that really started the movement of Christianity. As far as who founded the first actual church, who knows.

As for those that claim Jesus Christ founded the Catholic church... He didn't come to start a new religion; he came to save the world from sin. Some of you really need to do some homework.
