I had to answer this question several times before, allow me to provide u with a quick fact instead of a 50 page reply.
1- A muslim can NOT adopt - it is not allowed, simply illegal. To accomodate a female in your house, she has to be a first degree relative or a wife
2- The marriage was for the sake of adopting the girl and did not involve sexual relations
3- Marriage as an institution under islamic law does not necessarily mean sex - it is a legal channel whereby this girl could be a member of his household.
In a nut shell, it was not the traditional marriage of modern times, that involves sex, pregnancy etc.

He (SAW) married her because his good friend Abu Bakr wanted the Prophet to marry his daughter. That's right... you read that correctly, the father of Aisha wanted to give his daughter in marriage to the Prophet at such a young age because it was normal in those days. In fact, the Prophet gave his daughter Fatima (AS) in marriage to Ali (AS) when the girl was about 13 years old. It was perfectly acceptable and fine in those days to marry a young woman and it could never be considered pedophilia at that time!

Peace and salaam
In most cultures around the world, even in the United States up until about the 1950's it was common for women to marry quite young, during the 20th century the marital age was generally for women in their mid-to-late teens whilst previous to this (yes in the USA) marriage for young women who were just hitting puberty...i.e. 13-15 was normal while men traditionally married once they finished grammer school, obtained a skill and was working...making most men marriagable in their late teens, early 20's.
The currently marital age of early-mid-20's for women and late-20's, early 30's for men is a very recent phenomenon.
Another reason why societies tended to prefer young women becoming married in their teens or as soon as puberty hit was because of the high mortality rate, many women died giving birth and additionally, many women died due to disease.
now...During the prophet Mohammed time...and even before and after...think Ceasar the Roman Emperor and the time of Moses, young women typically married at puberty. Society considered them mature women, capable of being married...i.e. having children.
While we may scoff at this concept, our concept of later-marriage is a decidedly recent phenomenon.
Hence having a younthful wife was the norm...everywhere in the world, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia.
Another aspect of this is that frequently men married the daughters of allies or friends to strengthen ties and even if the girl was a child she would obviously not live with her husband until she reached puberty.
I remeber hearing that Mary the son of Jesus, peace be upon him was just barely a teen upon having her son.
Additionally, and alas, I dont have the sources with me, but I believe that the Prophet Mohammed PBUH did not "live" with his wife, Aisha until she had hit puberty and was therefore able to be a wife, she was also the daughter of a friend and allie of the Prophet Mohammed PBUH so marriage to her strengthened ties between the 2 families, and infact almost all of the Prophets marriages were based on tribal alliances and to strengthen the ties of both families.
This was a extremely common practice worldwide, even in the West up until the mid-20th century.
So before you jump to conclusions it might help to think about it from a historical perspective.

their culture doesn't concider it being a pedophile. when a girl is orphaned she can be taken to be a future wife. Why they don't just adopt orphans is beyond me. But I think it has to do with the fact they like to have sex with young women. That is a good excuse. You ought to hear the excuse for multiple wives.
that one will really through you.

Christian scholars say that Mary was 12 when she had Jesus, and Joseph was in his 30s or 40s, are they both pedophiles or neither?
