I'm not positive on pit bulls, but I know that in other breeds you drastically increase the risk of deaf and/or blind puppies. Chihuahua's, Great Danes, and Aussies come to my mind first. Since it's the same merle gene in all breeds of dogs, I would assume that it's the same in pit bulls. Good luck on your breeding, as long as you find the BEST homes for them you're doing your job. BREEDERS are not to blame for the "overpopulation"...irresponsible owners are!

**On a side note, I have raised litters that were merle/merle breedings and had perfectly normal puppies. So it isn't a 100% guarantee that you'll have problems, but the risks are very high..say 98%. And it's so hard to put a young puppy to sleep..I'd find a differerent color to breed her to just to be on the safe side.

You never breed two merles in any breed because of the HUGE possibility of birth defects, deafness, and blindness. It's not a possibility, you WILL have one or all of these problems in the litter. And yes, unless you have champion dogs, you don't need to be breeding them.

You may be lucky to get 1 merel and the rest reds. You can't breed for 100% color. So have them both fixed and then you wont have to worry!!!
